2 What is Life? The Characteristics of Living Things Organisms: living thing (ex. Human, dogs, ant, tree) 6 important characteristics all organisms share 1. Cellular organization -All organisms are made of cells -cells are the basic unit of structure and function in an organism -unicellular: single-celled organism -multicelluar: organism made up of many cells 2. Contain similar chemicals -most abundant is water -others include carbohydrates, proteins, lipids

3 3.Use energy -energy is used to for everything an organism must do 4. Growth and develop -growth is the process of becoming larger -development: process of change that occurs during an organism’s life to produce a more complex organism 5. Respond to their surrounding -stimulus: a change in an organism’s surrounding that causes the organism to react -response: an organisms reaction to a stimulus 6. Reproduce -the individual might not always reproduce, but the species must

4 Life Comes from Life It was once thought that life came from non-living sources. This idea is called spontaneous generation. Francesco Redi designed a controlled experiment to prove this wrong.

5 The Needs of Living Things All living things must satisfy their basic needs for energy, water, living space and stable internal condition Two different types of organisms: Autotroph and Heterotroph Autotroph: organisms that make their own food (ex. Plants) Heterotroph: organisms that cannot make their own food (ex. Humans, cats) All living things need water to survive. It is especially important because it allows needed substances to dissolve in it, such as oxygen. Each organism needs a place to get food, water and shelter. Organisms sometime share a living space with others or compete for living space. Homeostasis: maintaining a constant internal environment
