4. Life Comes from Life It was once thought that life came from non-living sources. This idea is called spontaneous generation. Francesco Redi designed a controlled experiment to prove this wrong.

The Needs of Living Things All living things must satisfy their basic needs for energy, water, living space and stable internal condition Two different types of organisms: Autotroph and Heterotroph Autotroph: organisms that make their own food (ex. Plants) Heterotroph: organisms that cannot make their own food (ex. Humans, cats) All living things need water to survive. It is especially important because it allows needed substances to dissolve in it, such as oxygen. Each organism needs a place to get food, water and shelter. Organisms sometime share a living space with others or compete for living space. Homeostasis: maintaining a constant internal environment
