ICARUS Collaboration Meeting 29-30 Dec. 2010 A. Scaramelli

Moving ICARUS from LNGS to CERN Tranport of all the ICARUS system, including cryostats, like they are, but without their thermal isolation Transport of the ICARUS system, without the cryostats, including wires chambers (internal detector) Cost estimate Many thanks to CERN Transport Group

Works made after 2005 in Hall B General increase of the Hall B floor level by 30 cm Construction of a concrete bump of about 25cm height between the Hall B and the TIR gallery Installation of WARP Installation of the OPERA barrack Installation of other minor devices

General increase of the floor level in Hall B

Works made after 2005 in TIR Gallery Installation of fire resistant doors (so called filters) reducing height (from 4,75 m to 4,6 m) and passage by 20 cm Installation of a ventilation duct on the top of the tunnel with an overall height from the floor of 4,6 m Installation of a Linde new Tank, reducing the passage to 4.3 m

Scope of the Transport 2 cryostats containing wire chambers (ext. dimensions 3970x4403 mm by 20’209 mm length) ; unit weight = 48,5 t Structures and equipments for a total volume of ~1’800 mc (26mx11mx10m – 2 tanks) composed of: – 2 tanks 30 m3 – 5 pumping groups – 100 electrical cupboards – Cryogenic material (tanks, pipes, filters etc) – Metal structure, – Bulk material – Stirling Nytrogen liquefaction system

Present situation

Cryostat movement in present conditions Several clashes on floor and walls

Requested Floor modification (300mm)

Moving cryostats: works to do in Hall B Dismantling of the bump Reduction of the floor level of Hall B by 30 cm for ~10 m from TIR gallery Dismantling of OPERA barrack Dismantling of the WARP clean room (?) Removing of the lamps and minor equipment around the door

Works in TIR Gallery Height of the truck = 275 mm, so the overall height of the convoy is = 4675 mm which is not compatible with the door height. MUST BE TEMPORARY REMOVED: All new doors in west direction (filters) The air duct recently installed in the vault of TIR gallery The Linde tank

Air Pads Using Air pads in TIR gallery is not technically feasible for the following reasons: The height of pads is > 10 cm Doors have steps on their base (height = 14-15cm) The overall height in this configuration will be 4,5 m. The pads rails must have ramps to jump the steps. The cryostat passing on the step will be tilted and will hit the following door and the air duct Once the step passed, the bottom of the cryostat will touch the step bump.

Moving the Internal Detector Opening the front wall (door) Dismantling of a part of the tubes and wires to accede to the fix point and unblock it. This is necessary for access to feet Lifting of the assembly with jacks (how many? Lifting points?) Inserting rails and chariots under feet Reassembling of wires and tubes Traction of the whole wires chambers in a transport structure to guarantee the structural stability, a support truck interface and weather resistance

Internal Detector + frame for handling

Open problemes Shape, dimensions, fix point accessibility and interference to check Position, shape, tooling, rails and support requirements Possibility to lift the structure with jacks for inserting rails ‘Tractionability’ of the whole (the inner structure shall offer pulling points and have sufficient static resistance to avoid damaging of the wires + tubes) Maximum admissible tilt for both horizontal planes Interface points with transport structure

Positive issues The total weight of the transport structure + detector is < than 40 t, permitting the use of the crane and an easier rotation maneuvre, with a significant reduction of the number of objects to dismantle: -Doors -Air duct -Floor of Hall B

Must be removed in any case Bump in Hall B OPERA barrack Linde new tank

Cost Estimate 2 x Cryostats (Special transport) 100 k€ 15/20 trucks (1.5 k€ each) 30 “ Dismantling ICARUS in LNGS (5 m/month) 40 “ Various items 50 “ Total 230 k€ Works in LNGS galleries are in charge (!?) to LNGS

Conclusions The ICARUS cryostats trasport from LNGS to CERN is feasible for a cost estimate relatively acceptable Heavy works in LNGS schould be done Themal Isolation will be destroyed Project for new cryostat schould start asap
