3 Kinetic Theory of Matter According to the kinetic theory of matter, matter is made of atoms and molecules. These atoms and molecules act like tiny particles that are always in motion – The higher the temperature of the substance, the faster the particles move – At the same temperature, more massive particles move slower than less massive particles

4 States of Matter You can classify matter as a solid, a liquid, or a gas by determining whether the shape and volume are definite or variable Because the particles in liquids and gases can move past each other, they are fluids Plasma is a state of matter that does not have a definite shape or volume

5 Energy’s Role Energy is the ability to change or move matter, or to do work. The energy in motion is called kinetic energy Temperature is a measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles in an object Thermal energy is the total kinetic energy of the particles that make up a substance

6 Homework Page 81 #2, 3, 4 & 5 Write down the questions
