2 What is Genocide? Genocide as defined by the United Nations in 1948 means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group, including: • Killing members of the group • Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group • Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part • Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group • Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group

3 Is there just one type of genocide?

4 Types of genocide Omnicide- simultaneous intentional genocide against numerous races, nations, religions, etc. War crimes against humanity-crimes committed in the course of military actions against military targets, or treatment of prisoners Cultural Genocide- intentional destruction of the culture of another people, not necessarily including the destruction of actual lives Ethnocide- intentional destruction of an ethnic group, including actual lives and disbursement of the people and elimination of culture. Linguicide- forbidding the use of the language of another people

In groups you are to walk to each station: Read the scenario Discuss it as a group (7 minutes) As a group decide on whether it is an example of genocide or not and why? The answer and the explanation must be at least 5 sentences. Choose 1 person to be your representative
