SATAID (Satellite Animation and Interactive Diagnosis)
Originally developed by JMA’s MSC as an application software to display satellite imagery and NWP data for training purposes
Provided to NMHSs as a JMA’s contribution to WMO-CGMS Virtual Laboratory for Training in Satellite Meteorology (VL).
Today, used also as an operational tool for daily weather analysis including tropical cyclone monitoring at JMA’s HQ and local offices
Freely available to NMHSs and easy to install
Armed with lots of functions

The core of SATAID system is GMSLPW (GMS Loop for Windows) and LRITAPL (SATAID menu program)
GMSLPW is a viewer program to display satellite imagery and other data
LRITAPL is a menu program to prepare various data for GMSLPW
GMSLPD is an extended version of GMSLPW with specialized functions for Dvorak analysis 5

Display (and overlay) satellite imagery and NWP data (and various observations i.e. SYNOP, SHIP, TEMP, Radar, Wind Profiler, QuikSCAT etc. if its format prepared)
Use many functions: vertical cross-sectional chart, time-series chart, digital data output to CSV file......
Customize and draw as you like
Save as a file including a package of all data, your drawing and comments, which will be useful for training and case study

Extract NWP data (in GRIB format) and satellite imagery (in McIDAS, LRIT, HRIT format) and make SATAID formatted data
Automatically start GMSLPW and update the data routinely

Select "Server" from option menu
Confirm that the image server name is www3.bom.gov.au, port number 50005, satellite GMS5, GOES9, MTSAT1 or FY2, and compression is OFF (port number for MTSAT1, for FY2)
Confirm that NWP server name is ddb.kishou.go.jp and port number is 80
GMS5 : Compatible data of MTSAT-1R with GMS-5 is 8 bits per pixel and has no IR4.
GOES9 : Compatible data of MTSAT-1R with GOES-9 is 10 bits per pixel and has IR4.
MTSAT1 : Data of MTSAT-1R is 10 bits per pixel and has IR4.
FY2 : Data of FY-2C is 10 bits per pixel and has IR4. 14

As a WIS prototype service, JMA prepares website providing SATAID data
ID and password required (provided to each NMHS)
GRIB (GRIdded Binary): bit-oriented data exchange format
The Man computer Interactive Data Access System (McIDAS) is a large, research quality suite of applications used for decoding, analyzing, and displaying meteorological data for research and education
The Low Rate Information Transmission (LRIT) is a new imagery dissemination service for Small-scale Data Utilization Station (SDUS). The LRIT data format is a digital format standardized by the Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites (CGMS), whereas the existing WEFAX is an analogue transmission
The High Rate Information Transmission (HRIT) is a new data dissemination service for Medium-scale Data Utilization Station
(MDUS). The HRIT data format is a digital format standardized by CGMS
