1 Using Exponents to Write Large Numbers
By Monica Yuskaitis

2 For Learning to Happen! Clear your desk of anything that may
distract you. Remove all other thoughts from your mind. Pay close attention. Try all the examples. Ignore all other distractions.

3 What Is the Standard Form
Exponents of Ten What Is the Standard Form of These Tens? 2 100 10 3 1,000 4 10,000 5 100,000

4 Exponents of Ten Notice that the number of zeros matches the exponent number 2 100 10 3 1,000 4 10,000 5 100,000

5 Multiplying Multiples of Ten
Multiply These Numbers 100 x 2 = 200 1,000 x 3 = 3,000 10,000 x 7 = 70,000 100,000 x 9 = 900,000

6 Multiplying Multiples of Ten
Did you notice that all you have to do is multiply 1 x whole number & add the zeros behind? 100 x 2 = 200 1,000 x 3 = 3,000 10,000 x 7 = 70,000 100,000 x 9 = 900,000

7 Short Cut for Writing Large Numbers
Combine these two steps for writing large numbers. 6 x 10 2 600 = 6 x (10 x 10) = 6 x 100 = 600

8 Short Cut for Writing Large Numbers
Remember! The exponent is the same as the number of zeros. 2 6 x 10 600 =

9 What is the Standard Number?
7 x 10 2 700 =

10 What is the Standard Number?

12 What is the Standard Number?
4 x 10 2 400 =

13 What is the Exponent Form?
2 500 5 x 10 =

14 What is the Exponent Form?
3 6,000 6 x 10 =

15 What is the Exponent Form?
4 90,000 9 x 10 =

16 What is the Exponent Form?
