2 Love Your God With All Your Mind Christopher W. Ashcraft, M.S.
by Chris Ashcraft Christopher W. Ashcraft, M.S.

3 The Creation And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light.
God spoke the cosmos into existence. And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. Genesis 1:3 By the word of the LORD were the heavens made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth. Psalm 33:6 God spoke the cosmos into existence. God’s word became manifest in the creation. The word of God actually exists in 3 forms. The written word, which is the Bible, the Living word – His son, and the spoken word, which is the creation. We can therefore learn about God by studying His creation. It is for this reason that most people have a natural interest in science or the study of nature. God created a word that is marvelous and testifies continuously of His glory.

4 Created To Be Studied The Earth is the perfect distance from the sun
Our moon is just the right size and distance from Earth. Our moon’s gravity stabilizes the Earth’s rotation. Our position in our galaxy is just so. Our sun is its precise mass and composition. Our atmosphere is clear allowing investigation of the cosmos. All of these factors (and many more), are not only necessary for Earth’s habitability; they also have been surprisingly crucial for scientists to measure and make discoveries about the universe. The intelligent design community has asserted that God created the cosmos specifically so that we could investigate it. They point to examples such as the fact that our atmosphere is transparent allowing us to peer out at the stars. It would also seem that God created our world in such a way that we would never be able to finish exploring it - no matter how much we develop our telescopic or microscopic technologies. We will always find more out there than we new existed before. Microscopes, such as the electron microscopes, have enabled us to now see organisms and details never before imagined, and allow us to further marvel at God’s handiwork. 29 When I look at the solar system, I see the earth at the right distance from the sun to receive the proper amounts of heat and light. This did not happen by chance. This most beautiful system of the sun, planets, and comets, could only proceed from the counsel and dominion of an intelligent Being. The majority of the founding fathers of our science disciplines believed in God, and were educated by the Church. One such famous scientists of old said this… Any guesses who this was? 30 U.S. Christian Heritage Twenty seven of the 56 founding fathers of the U.S. had Christian seminary degrees. 106 of the first 108 schools in America were founded by Christians. Many of the founding fathers of our country also believed in God. Historically it was the Church who provided education, and that was also the case during the early years of our country, but today we are not allowed to teach about God and His creation in our schools. This is especially puzzling when you consider recent polls which show that the majority of the people in our society believe in God.

31 March 31, 2007 March 31, 2007 Story link - Newsweek March 30, A belief in God and an identification with an organized religion are widespread throughout the country, according to the latest NEWSWEEK poll. Nine in 10 (91 percent) of American adults say they believe in God and almost as many (87 percent) say they identify with a specific religion. Christians far outnumber members of any other faith in the country, with 82 percent of the poll’s respondents identifying themselves as such. Another 5 percent say they follow a non-Christian faith, such as Judaism or Islam. Nearly half (48 percent) of the public rejects the scientific theory of evolution; one-third (34 percent) of college graduates say they accept the Biblical account of creation as fact. Seventy-three percent of Evangelical Protestants say they believe that God created humans in their present form within the last 10,000 years; 39 percent of non-Evangelical Protestants and 41 percent of Catholics agree with that view.

Roger DeHart 1997, the American Civil Liberties Union threatened to sue the Burlington-Edison School District because Dehart was introducing evidence of intelligent design in his biology class. In response to the threats of impending lawsuit, the district took away the biology classes from his teaching load, and he was reassigned to earth sciences. 44 Beliefs of Scientists 1916 James H. Leuba performed a landmark survey in which he found that 58% of 1,000 randomly selected US scientists expressed disbelief or doubt in the existence of God, and near 70% among “greater” scientists. Leuba, J. H. The Belief in God and Immortality: A Psychological, Anthropological and Statistical Study (Sherman, French & Co., Boston, 1916). Leuba randomly polled scientists listed in the standard reference work, American Men of Science (AMS).

45 Beliefs of Scientists 1934 Leuba repeated his survey in somewhat different form, and found that these percentages had increased to 67 and 85, respectively. Leuba, J. H. Harper’s Magazine 169, 291–300 (1934). Leuba predicted that the numbers would continue to increase as education spread.

46 Beliefs of Scientists 1996 Edward J. Larson reproduced Leuba’s survey as exactly as possible, and found that the beliefs of scientists remained unchanged. Edward Larson is a Professor of Law at Pepperdine University. He received the 1998 Pulitzer Prize in History for his work, Summer for the Gods: The Scopes Trial and America's Continuing Debate Over Science and Religion. Edward Larson. 48 Beliefs of Scientists Overall comparison of “greater” scientists from the 1914, 1933 and 1998 surveys. Repeating Leuba’s methods presented challenges. For his general surveys, he randomly polled scientists listed in the standard reference work, American Men of Science (AMS). We used the current edition. In Leuba’s day, AMS editors designated the “great scientists” among their entries, and Leuba used these to identify his “greater” scientists. The AMS no longer makes these designations, so we chose as our “greater” scientists members of the NAS, a status that once assured designation as “great scientists” in the early AMS. From: Leading Scientists Still Reject God

49 Beliefs of Scientists 1998 Larson found that: "among the top natural scientists, disbelief is greater than ever; almost total". Mathematicians had the highest rate of belief % Biologists had the lowest rate of belief - 5.5% Larson, E. J. & Witham, L. Leading Scientists Still Reject God. Nature Vol. 394:6691 (1998) Our survey found near universal rejection of the transcendent by NAS natural scientists. Disbelief in God and immortality among NAS biological scientists was 65.2% and 69.0%, respectively, and among NAS physical scientists it was 79.0% and 76.3%. Most of the rest were agnostics on both issues, with few believers. We found the highest percentage of belief among NAS mathematicians (14.3% in God, 15.0% in immortality). Biological scientists had the lowest rate of belief (5.5% in God, 7.1% in immortality), with physicists and astronomers slightly higher (7.5% in God, 7.5% in immortality).

52 Creationist Response Facts do not speak for themselves, but must be interpreted according to a framework. The leading evolutionists are biased towards naturalism, to the extent that many are outspoken atheists. This is especially true of the National Academy of Science, the producers of Teaching about Evolution. Source: Refuting Evolution: Conclusion A Response to the NAS’ book Teaching About Evolution and the Nature of Science by Jonathan Sarfati

53 Perhaps an even more pervasive theme in this booklet is how the NAS sees the nature of doing science. "Science differs from religion because it is the nature of science to test and retest explanations against the natural world". Science relies solely on naturalistic explanations and thus excludes so-called creation science and intelligent-design concepts. Popperian falsification is affirmed as the norm for science and as satisfied for the theory of evolution. Indeed, the booklet stresses, scientists use the word "theory" so rigorously that when applied to the occurrence of evolution it means fact. Throughout this booklet, science is presented as a cumulative enterprise leading progressively to better understanding of nature and its uses-an enterprise that students can one day participate in if only their teachers show them the way. These teachers should be evangelists for science. This booklet offers encouragement and tools for that missionary activity. 55 National Academy of Sciences
Science and Creationism: A View from the National Academy of Sciences Publisher Description While the mechanisms of evolution are still under investigation, scientists universally accept that the cosmos, our planet, and life evolved and continue to evolve. Yet the teaching of evolution to schoolchildren is still contentious. In Science and Creationism, The National Academy of Sciences states unequivocally that creationism has no place in any science curriculum at any level. Briefly and clearly, this booklet explores the nature of science, reviews the evidence for the origin of the universe and earth, and explains the current scientific understanding of biological evolution. This edition includes new insights from astronomy and molecular biology. Attractive in presentation and authoritative in content, Science and Creationism will be useful to anyone concerned about America's scientific literacy: education policymakers, school boards and administrators, curriculum designers, librarians, teachers, parents, and students.

56 First of all you must understand this, that scoffers will come in the last days with scoffing, following their own passions and saying, "Where is the promise of his coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things have continued as they were from the beginning." They deliberately ignore this fact, that by the word of God heavens existed long ago, and an earth formed out of water and by means of water, through which the world that then existed was deluged with water and perished. 2 Peter 3:3-6

64 Education The purpose of education: Godly purpose Worldly purpose
The value of education: Benefit Cost Unfortunately, as Christians we too quickly become of the world and start doing things the way of the secular culture. And that is also the case with education. We have adopted the purpose of education as defined by our society. What is the purpose of education according to our society. Why do we go to school? – To get a job. To make lots of money. To be a productive member of society or for the good of the nation, rather than for the good of the kingdom of heaven.

65 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.
Matthew 22:37

66 Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. 1 Peter 3:15 What do we need to do – to be prepared? Study…. Do we as adults need to go back to school – No. The most important thing we learn in school is how to learn. Most of our education takes place at home – when we are reading, studying materials, or doing research. We all know how to learn. And there is a tremendous community of scientists who believe the Bible and offer education materials in Worldviews and Creation Apologetics.

67 Worldviews Biblical Secular God created the universe
God created life – human beings Universe is young Secular Big Bang origin of the universe Life formed via natural processes Universe 12 – 15 billion years old What do you need to do to be prepared? – you must study – and educate yourself. God needs us to be scholars, and in particular to understand the two worldviews that permeate our society.

73 Parable of the Talents Matthew 25:14-30 "Again, it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his property to them. To one he gave five talents of money, to another two talents, and to another one talent, each according to his ability. Then he went on his journey. The man who had received the five talents went at once and put his money to work and gained five more. So also, the one with the two talents gained two more. But the man who had received the one talent went off, dug a hole in the ground and hid his master's money.  "After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them.

74 Parable of the Talents The man who had received the five talents brought the other five. 'Master,' he said, 'you entrusted me with five talents. See, I have gained five more.' "His master replied, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!‘ "The man with the two talents also came. 'Master,' he said, 'you entrusted me with two talents; see, I have gained two more.' "His master replied, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!'

75 Parable of the Talents "Then the man who had received the one talent came. 'Master,' he said, 'I knew that you are a hard man, harvesting where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed. So I was afraid and went out and hid your talent in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you.' "His master replied, 'You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed? Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest. " 'Take the talent from him and give it to the one who has the ten talents. For everyone who has will be given more, and he will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him. And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.'
