Real Trust is Costly We often want to have valuable things without any effort. As a result many settle for “bargains” that are nothing more than mirages.

Real Trust is Costly What is trust? (a) Firm reliance on the integrity, ability, or character of a person or thing. (b) Custody; care. (c) The condition and resulting obligation of having confidence placed in one: violated a public trust. (d) One in which confidence is placed.

Real Trust is Costly There were many who wanted Jesus to trust Him because of their words. (Jn 2:23-25)

Real Trust is Costly John 2: Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed in His name when they saw the signs which He did. 24 But Jesus did not commit Himself to them, because He knew all men, 25 and had no need that anyone should testify of man, for He knew what was in man.

Real Trust is Costly We need to see where we really place our trust. Some have found “bargains” that will fail in the day of testing. (Ex. Dad’s new car) (Jer 2:13; 14:3)

Real Trust is Costly Jeremiah 2:13 - “For My people have committed two evils: They have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters, And hewn themselves cisterns—broken cisterns that can hold no water.

Real Trust is Costly We need to examine if others can really trust us. We must open our eyes!

Our God is worthy of our trust
God wants us to know this and then actually place our trust in Him. (Psa 36:7)

Psalm 36:7 - How precious is Your lovingkindness, O God! Therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of Your wings.

One of the things that breaks our hearts down to trust God is His great goodness.

The king of Assyria boldly said this. (2 Kgs 19:10-12)

2 Kings 19: “Thus you shall speak to Hezekiah king of Judah, saying: ‘Do not let your God in whom you trust deceive you, saying, “Jerusalem shall not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.” 11 Look! You have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands by utterly destroying them; and shall you be delivered?

12 Have the gods of the nations delivered those whom my fathers have destroyed, Gozan and Haran and Rezeph, and the people of Eden who were in Telassar?

He learned a lesson but never learned to trust the true God. (2 Kgs 19:35-37)

2 Kings 19: And it came to pass on a certain night that the angel of the Lord went out, and killed in the camp of the Assyrians one hundred and eighty-five thousand; and when people arose early in the morning, there were the corpses—all dead. 36So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed and went away, returned home, and remained at Nineveh.

37 Now it came to pass, as he was worshiping in the temple of Nisroch his god, that his sons Adrammelech and Sharezer struck him down with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Ararat. Then Esarhaddon his son reigned in his place.

Notice where Sennacherib died! (2 Chron 32:20-21)

2 Chronicles 32: Now because of this King Hezekiah and the prophet Isaiah, the son of Amoz, prayed and cried out to heaven. 21Then the Lord sent an angel who cut down every mighty man of valor, leader, and captain in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he returned shamefaced to his own land. And when he had gone into the temple of his god, some of his own offspring struck him down with the sword there.

We are blessed if we can build such a trust. We then will have a shield that nothing can break down! (2 Sam 22:3-4, 31)

2 Samuel 22: The God of my strength, in whom I will trust; My shield and the horn of my salvation, My stronghold and my refuge; My Savior, You save me from violence. 4 I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised; So shall I be saved from my enemies.

2 Samuel 22:31 - As for God, His way is perfect; The word of the Lord is proven; He is a shield to all who trust in Him.

There is a big difference between a passing trust and a real one.

If you trust in the Lord that trust will be tested. (Rom 5:3-5)

Therefore he sent for him more often and conversed with him.

Satan has many “bargains” to make you feel secure.

Mark 10: And the disciples were astonished at His words. But Jesus answered again and said to them, “Children, how hard it is for those who trust in riches to enter the kingdom of God! 25It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”

Military power and skill. (Psa 20:7-8; 44:6-7)

Powerful political and business leaders. (Psa 146:3-4)

Psalm 146: Do not put your trust in princes, Nor in a son of man, in whom there is no help. 4 His spirit departs, he returns to his earth; In that very day his plans perish.

Ones own heart. (Prov 28:26)

Proverbs 28:26 - He who trusts in his own heart is a fool, But whoever walks wisely will be delivered.

Where you place you trust will also affect your trustworthiness.

There was a social “acceptance” and an “easy” morality that went along with this.

I will have a set of priorities and affections that surround it. (Ex. Football)

Trusting in another takes time, knowledge and interaction.

Many say they trust God but have their own clique that they care about. All others better stay out!

Some common trustbusters
Selling one out because of a greater “loyalty.” (Psa 41:9)

Judas had a love of money.

The love of gossip and tale bearing. (Jas 3:5)

Those who do this will find themselves without those they can trust. (Prov 28:25)

Those who love the Lord know the difference between love and self-exaltation.

It is hard to trust God with your vengeance. (Rom 12:19)

Some give into bitterness and will pursue another till their death. They will also go to hell.
