A pronoun is a word that takes the place of a noun. My father opened my father’s present first. My father opened his present first. An antecedent is the noun for which a pronoun stands.

Personal pronouns refer to the person speaking, the person spoken to, and the person, place, or thing spoken about. Jim forgot his hat.
