2 Rate Record the definition in your math journal on page R. A rate is a ratio that compares two quantities with different types of units. Una tasa es una razón que compara dos cantidades con diferentes tipos de unidades. An example of rate is $5 for 2 pounds or 130 miles in 2 hours.

3 Record the definition in your math journal on page U.
Unit Rate Record the definition in your math journal on page U. When a rate is simplified so it has a denominator of 1, it is called a unit rate. Cuando una tasa se simplifica por lo que tiene un denominador de 1, se llama una tasa de unidad. An example of a unit rate is $6.50 per hour, which means $6.50 per 1 hour.

4 Find a Unit Rate Darius drove 186 miles in 3 hours. What was Darius’ average rate of speed in miles per hour? Write the rate that expresses the comparison of miles of hours. Then find the average speed by finding the unit rate. 186 miles 62 miles 3 hours 1 hour Darius drove an average speed of 62 miles per hour. Divide the numerator and denominator by 3 to get a denominator of 1. =

5 Find a Unit Rate 24 tickets for 8 rides

6 Find a Unit Rate 4 inches of rain in 5 hours

7 Comparing Unit Rates 30¢ ÷ 2 = 15¢ So one apple is 15¢
A unit rate tells how much something is per unit. For example, if apples are 2 for 30¢, to find the unit rate, you would divide the price (30¢) by the quantity (2). 30¢ ÷ 2 = 15¢ So one apple is 15¢

8 Comparing Unit Rates “Better Buy”
A good consumer will compare the unit rates of items to find the best deal by determining which item has a less expensive cost per unit. 20¢ per oz $4.00 25¢ per oz $3.00 Fruit Loops 20 oz. Box Fruit Loops 12 oz. Box

9 Compare Unit Rates A 17-ounce box of cereal for $4.89 or a 21-ounce box for $5.69

10 Compare Unit Rates 6 cans of green beans for $1 or 10 cans for $1.95

11 Estimating Unit Rates 12 bottles of Coca-Cola for $6.48.
Estimate the unit cost:

12 Buying More 12 bottles of Coca-Cola for $6.48.
