6 I’m gonna open up a can of worms today!

7 Peter couldn’t hide from it, and neither should we

8 We’ve got to do some…

9 Prejudice It Means To Pre-Judge Someone, Or To Have An Opinion About Someone Without An Adequate Basis

10 So Often We Pre-Judge Someone Based On…
Race Religion Gender Age Appearance Financial Status Sexual Behavior

11 Being real means we must acknowledge that we haven’t arrived yet!

12 “I HAVEN’T ARRIVED YET!”

13 2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

14 Sometimes you go three steps forward, and two steps back!

15 Let’s Take A Look At Peter Moving Three Steps Forward

16 Acts 10:1-6 1 There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of the band called the Italian band, 2 A devout man, and one that feared God with all his house, which gave much alms to the people, and prayed to God alway.

17 Acts 10:1-6 3 He saw in a vision evidently about the ninth hour of the day an angel of God coming in to him, and saying unto him, Cornelius. 4 And when he looked on him, he was afraid, and said, What is it, Lord? And he said unto him, Thy prayers and thine alms are come up for a memorial before God.

18 Acts 10:1-6 5 And now send men to Joppa, and call for one Simon, whose surname is Peter:
6 He lodgeth with one Simon a tanner, whose house is by the sea side: he shall tell thee what thou oughtest to do.

19 Acts 10: On the morrow, as they went on their journey, and drew nigh unto the city, Peter went up upon the housetop to pray about the sixth hour: 10 And he became very hungry, and would have eaten: but while they made ready, he fell into a trance,

20 Acts 10: And saw heaven opened, and a certain vessel descending upon him, as it had been a great sheet knit at the four corners, and let down to the earth: 12 Wherein were all manner of fourfooted beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air.

21 Acts 10:9-19 13 And there came a voice to him, Rise, Peter; kill, and eat.
14 But Peter said, Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean. 15 And the voice spake unto him again the second time, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common.

22 Acts 10:9-19 16 This was done thrice: and the vessel was received up again into heaven.
17 Now while Peter doubted in himself what this vision which he had seen should mean, behold, the men which were sent from Cornelius had made enquiry for Simon's house, and stood before the gate,

23 Acts 10:9-19 18 And called, and asked whether Simon, which was surnamed Peter, were lodged there.
19 While Peter thought on the vision, the Spirit said unto him, Behold, three men seek thee.

24 Acts 10:23-25 23 Then called he them in, and lodged them
Acts 10: Then called he them in, and lodged them. And on the morrow Peter went away with them, and certain brethren from Joppa accompanied him.

25 Acts 10:23-25 24 And the morrow after they entered into Caesarea
Acts 10: And the morrow after they entered into Caesarea. And Cornelius waited for them, and he had called together his kinsmen and near friends.

26 Acts 10: And as Peter was coming in, Cornelius met him, and fell down at his feet, and worshipped him.

29 Acts 10:26 But Peter took him up, saying, Stand up; I myself also am a man.
I’m a man just like you

30 Acts 10:28 And he said unto them, Ye know how that it is an unlawful thing for a man that is a Jew to keep company, or come unto one of another nation; but God hath shewed me that I should not call any man common or unclean. I’m a man just like you I shall not call any man common or unclean

31 Acts 10:31 & And said, Cornelius, thy prayer is heard, and thine alms are had in remembrance in the sight of God. 35 But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him. I’m a man just like you I shall not call any man common or unclean God will hear the prayers of any man

32 Acts 10:34 Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons: I’m a man just like you I shall not call any man common or unclean God will hear the prayers of any man God is no respecter of persons

33 Acts 10:42 And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead. I’m a man just like you I shall not call any man common or unclean God will hear the prayers of any man God is no respecter of persons God is the judge, not me

34 Acts 10: To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins. I’m a man just like you I shall not call any man common or unclean God will hear the prayers of any man God is no respecter of persons God is the judge, not me God will save whosoever believes in Jesus Christ

35 Acts 10: While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. I’m a man just like you I shall not call any man common or unclean God will hear the prayers of any man God is no respecter of persons God is the judge, not me God will save whosoever believes in Jesus Christ

36 Acts 10: And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. I’m a man just like you I shall not call any man common or unclean God will hear the prayers of any man God is no respecter of persons God is the judge, not me God will save whosoever believes in Jesus Christ

37 Look! Peter Even Stands Up Before The Church And Elders In Jerusalem

38 Acts 15: And when they were come to Jerusalem, they were received of the church, and of the apostles and elders, and they declared all things that God had done with them.

39 Acts 15: But there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees which believed, saying, That it was needful to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the law of Moses.

40 Acts 15:4-11 6 And the apostles and elders came together for to consider of this matter.
7 And when there had been much disputing, Peter rose up, and said unto them, Men and brethren, ye know how that a good while ago God made choice among us, that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word of the gospel, and believe.

41 Acts 15: And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us; 9 And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.

42 Acts 15: Now therefore why tempt ye God, to put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear? 11 But we believe that through the grace of the LORD Jesus Christ we shall be saved, even as they.

43 Doesn’t That Sound Good? He’s Got It Nailed, Right?

44 WRONG!

45 …Two Steps Back!

46 Galatians 2:1 Then fourteen years after I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, and took Titus with me also.

47 Galatians 2:11 But when Peter was come to Antioch, I withstood him to the face, because he was to be blamed.

48 Galatians 2:12 For before that certain came from James, he did eat with the Gentiles: but when they were come, he withdrew and separated himself, fearing them which were of the circumcision.

49 STEP ONE Peter Feared Comfort or Conflict?
Carry the Cross or carry an attitude?

50 STEP TWO Peter Failed He separated and withdrew himself from Gentile Believers

51 WHY? Because of peer pressure Because he wanted to keep the peace
Because of pride

52 Galatians 2:13 And the other Jews dissembled likewise with him; insomuch that Barnabas also was carried away with their dissimulation.

53 OTHERS FOLLOWED They Feared & Failed (Even Barnabas)

54 Look at verse 11 again… Galatians 2:11 But when Peter was come to Antioch, I withstood him to the face, because he was to be blamed.

55 Paul withstood him to his face! (because he was to be blamed)

56 Paul Rebuked Peter For His Phoniness!
Truth matters more than peace Paul was a freedom fighter

57

58 Galatians 2:14 But when I saw that they walked not uprightly according to the truth of the gospel, I said unto Peter before them all, If thou, being a Jew, livest after the manner of Gentiles, and not as do the Jews, why compellest thou the Gentiles to live as do the Jews? The unity of the Church

59 Galatians 2:15-17 15 We who are Jews by nature, and not sinners of the Gentiles,
The unity of the Church Justification by Faith alone

60 Galatians 2: Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified. The unity of the Church Justification by Faith alone

61 Galatians 2: But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, is therefore Christ the minister of sin? God forbid. The unity of the Church Justification by Faith alone

62 Galatians 2: For if I build again the things which I destroyed, I make myself a transgressor. 19 For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God. The unity of the Church Justification by Faith alone Freedom from Jewish Law

63 Galatians 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. The unity of the Church Justification by Faith alone Freedom from Jewish Law The all sufficiency of Jesus Christ

64 Galatians 2:21 I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain. The unity of the Church Justification by Faith alone Freedom from Jewish Law The all sufficiency of Jesus Christ The Grace of God

67 How Did Peter Deal With Paul’s Rebuke?

68 HE TOOK IT LIKE A MAN OF GOD!

69 Listen to some of Peter’s last recorded words…

70 God Is Not Willing That Any Should Perish
2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

71 2 Peter 3: But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

72 Remember What Kind Of Person You Ought To Be In All Holy Conversation And Godliness
2 Peter 3: Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,

73 2 Peter 3: Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?

74 2 Peter 3: Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.

75 Be Diligent, Without Spot And Blameless
2 Peter 3: Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.

76 The Longsuffering Of Our Lord Is Salvation
2 Peter 3:15 And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you;

77 2 Peter 3: As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.

78 Beware Lest You Be Led Away And Fall
2 Peter 3: Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness.

79 Grow In Grace And The Knowledge Of Jesus
2 Peter 3:18 But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.
