The evolution of the Web from Web 1.0 to Web 2.0 has changed the perception of the Internet – from originating as a source of passive information to being looked at as a platform for interactive bi-directional data exchange. By adopting Web 2.0, enterprises can deliver an engaging, interactive, meaningful and useful web-based experience to customers, partners, and employees. Commerce sites have evolved from the first static sites which primarily pushed content to visitors, to highly dynamic sites. Media and entertainment downloads such as iTunes and video streams have grown exponentially with everyone wanting user generated content on their sites. In addition to this, worldwide broadband subscribership is set to grow to 400 million in 2010. Internet Challenges Slow and unreliable downloads and applications Not inherently secure Expensive and hard to provision The Internet today poses several challenges: Slow & unreliable downloads and applications Content and transactions must traverse multiple backbones and long distances. Content and transactions may be blocked by congestion or backbone peering problems. Usage is limited by bandwidth and CPU power available at master site. Unsecure Traffic can be stolen or blocked. Viruses, worms, Trojan horses, and spoofing attacks remain a rapidly spreading cancer on the Internet. Expensive and hard to provision Provisioning for peak usage and redundancy takes time and is cost prohibitive. Extra overheads associated with managing centralized infrastructure. When performance, reliability, or scalability problems occur, Web site adoption and usage can be negatively impacted, resulting in greater costs, decreased revenue, and customer satisfaction issues. Internet Bottlenecks The Internet challenges outlined previously are due to the following bottlenecks: First Mile Problem The first type of bottleneck is a function of the centralized model used to serve content on the Internet today. Each content provider sets up a Web site in a single physical location and disseminates data, services, and information to all Internet users around the world from this central location . This means that the speed with which users can access the site is necessarily limited by its First Mile connectivity – the bandwidth capacity of the Web site’s connection to the Internet. Peering: Points of Congestion The second type of Internet bottleneck occurs at peering points – the interconnection points between independent networks. The reasons why peering points are bottlenecks are mostly economic. First of all, networks have little incentive to set up free peering arrangements, since there is no revenue generation opportunity in that type of arrangement, but there are considerable setup costs. At the same time, none of the large networks is going to agree to pay another large network for peering, because from a traffic perspective, they would both benefit equally from such an arrangement. As a result, large networks end up not peering with each other very much and so the limited number of peering points between them end up as bottlenecks. Internet Bottlenecks A network generally purchases just enough capacity to handle current traffic levels, so every peering link is full. Unfortunately, this practice of running links at full capacity creates severe traffic bottlenecks. Links run at very high utilization, exhibit both high packet loss rates and very high latency (because of router queuing delays) even for the packets that can get through. As a result, web performance slows to a crawl. Backbone Routers and Switches The Border Gateway Protocol (BGP)—the Internet protocol used to determine high-level routes from one network to another—is another major source of Internet delivery bottlenecks. In computing routes, BGP only considers the “distance” or the number of hops between any two points; it lacks the ability to consider route performance data. This means BGP doesn’t adapt when a network or peering point router is overrun and dropping packets; it will continue to direct traffic through a slow, congested but “short” path. Even when a router goes completely offline, BGP can take up to 20 minutes to broadcast a new route. Additionally, networks can and do broadcast incorrect BGP information (either intentionally or accidentally), resulting in BGP paths that range from inefficient to incorrect. Last Mile Problem Last mile link is the bandwidth that connects the end user to the Internet. As more and more users gain access to faster Internet connections, the problem is shifting towards the already over-taxed middle-mile Internet bottlenecks. The Traditional ‘Do it Yourself’ Solution Involves: building out bigger and more data centers to handle demand. moving applications and content closer to geographically dispersed end users Problems with this approach: High infrastructure costs Idle, under utilized capital assets Need for data replication and synchronization High maintenance costs The brick and mortar approach to solving Internet problems is to build out bigger and more data centers thus adding servers and bandwidth to handle demand while moving applications and content closer to geographically dispersed end users. For example, companies may deploy a data center on each U.S. coast, one in EMEA, and another in Asia-Pac. There are several problems with this brute force approach: Building out infrastructure to handle peak demand is expensive and will result at times in idle, under-utilized capital assets and high maintenance costs. While adding data centers alleviates middle-mile bottlenecks for those users in close proximity to a data-center, it introduces the need for data replication and synchronization which add cost, complexity and compliance risks. 12 Networks - ESSL The ESSL Network is a separate network; Secure content will be served over a different map than regular HTTP content ESSL GHost regions sit behind a switch/load-balancer that has 1 VIP per region for each ESSL customer certificate. These load balancers accept traffic on ports 80 and 443 but will forward all transactions to the actual GHost servers on ports 9000 and 9001 respectively. ESSL customers are assigned a "slot" number, this slot is assigned a unique VIP for each ESSL region. 14 Networks – ESSL (cont.) New SSL certificates are activated by Akamai for all new ESSL customers Obtain a completed SSL certificate form from the customer. Submit certificate request to Akamai’s ESSL operations. Create and deploy certificate to ESSL network. Certificate Signatures By default, all certificates provisioned by Akamai are Akamai-signed (as a subordinate Certificate Authority of BeTrusted) Customers may require a third party signature; such as, Verisign Once the SSL certificate form is completed by the customer, a Certificate Signing Request (CSR) should be submitted to ESSL operations. ESSL operations will provide a certificate, requiring signature from the designated third party. Once signed, the fully qualified certificate is provided back to Akamai and deployed to the ESSL network.

15 Freeflow Vs ESSL Akamai’s EdgeSuite network will provide SSL object delivery, but it will do so using the fixed v1 ARL domain a248.3.akamai.net. Such delivery will use a generic Akamai certificate. The ESSL network provides dedicated servers ensuring that SSL certificates are properly protected Certificate decryption only occurs in memory. Physical intrusion detection devices are used to monitor and alert undesired access; if undesired access occurs, the server will automatically delete anything in memory. Akamai selects only locations where strict access procedures are practiced. Servers are in locked cabinets with motion detecting video cameras.

16 Akamai Server Characteristics
Akamai servers known as “Edge Servers”. Edge servers are configured to meet the needs of Akamai customers, and as a result must be intimately familiar with its functionality. Edge servers are reverse HTTP proxy servers, running Akamai proprietary software.

17 Characteristics of Ghost (cont.)
An Akamai region contains multiple Edge Servers. An Edge Server runs a single instance of the reverse HTTP proxy server software. Every Edge Server running on the Internet is a shared resource and can, in theory, serve content for any and all of Akamai’s customers. Freeflow (non-SSL) Edge Servers listen for HTTP requests on port 80. ESSL Edge Servers listen on port 80 and port 443.

Parent either serves from cache or forwards request to origin. Parent then has object in cache, and can share with region. Inter-Cache Protocol Before going to the origin, GHost makes a broadcast request to other Ghosts in the region: "Does anyone have this object?“ If no response from another GHost before a fairly short timeout, GHost goes forward to the parent or origin. Akamai Server Customer Origin DNS Akamai servers in the same region End User Tiered distribution is a cache hierarchy that allows multiple edge deployments to be mapped to a parent region. This provides for additional origin offload, protection against flash crowd traffic, and better performance. Tiered Distribution instructs Akamai servers at the edge of the Internet to fetch content from a parent Akamai server within a core region. Only the parent servers fetch content from the origin server. Adjusting the Tiered Distribution map can impact the performance to the user and the traffic to the origin. Using the default global map improves end user performance as the Akamai parent caching servers are located close to the Akamai edge servers. By selecting the region map that represents the location of your origin while configuring Tiered Distribution options, you can further reduce the load on your origin. This is because parent servers will answer to more edge servers. However, performance is impacted when an edge server must make a cacheable object request to the parent or the origin as the distance is now longer. Akamai recommends leaving the Tiered Distribution map at the default global setting unless origin off-load is a critical concern. Akamai DSA Skilled Professional – Introduction to DSA

Akamai EdgeControl Tools Content Refreshing Tools: Used to refresh cached content on the Akamai server network. Diagnostic Tools: Used to diagnose content delivery problems. Akamai provides a whole range of tools to help you manage your content and troubleshoot content delivery issues. These tools include: The Content Control Utility (CCU) and Enhanced Content Control Utility (ECCU) to refresh cached content on the Akamai server network. The Configuration Manager which enables you to configure how Akamai edge servers request content objects from your origin, how they cache or process those objects, and how they serve content to the requesting client. The Configuration Manager is available for many Akamai products, but whether you see a particular option in Configuration Manager depends on your product and your Akamai contract.
