2 How can I identify and use adjectives?
The BIG Question: How can I identify and use adjectives? For these past two weeks we’ve been investigating this big question. Can someone remind us? We learned that adjectives can be used in different places in a sentence. Last time, we learned how to use adjectives to compare. If you are comparing just two things, what ending do you often add to an adjective? … 2

3 Use –er to compare most short adjectives with one other thing
Earth’s gravity is stronger than the moon’s gravity. Mercury is tinier than Mars. Jupiter is bigger than any other planet. In this * sentence, what is the adjective? * What two things does it compare? * (do next two in same manner) What ending do you usually add to an adjective when you are comparing one object to two or more other objects? * We found out that sometimes, you can’t use the endings –er and –est. For example, you can’t say, “Science is excitinger than spelling.” What do you do then? … Use –est to compare most short adjectives with two or more other things The sun is the closest star to Earth. The moon is the brightest object in the night sky. Mercury is the nearest planet of all to the sun.

4 Use more with longer adjectives to compare two things.
Bear cubs are more playful than adult bears. I think polar bears are more beautiful than black bears. All bears are more dangerous than house pets. In this * sentence, what is the adjective? * What two things does it compare? * (do next two in same manner) What if you are comparing one object to two or more other objects? Then you can’t use more. What will you use then? What does it compare? There are two words, good and bad, that have special forms that must be used when you are comparing things. Let’s start with the word… Use most with longer adjectives to compare one thing with two or more other things. The iris is the most wonderful flower I’ve ever seen. Some of the most famous poems are about flowers. Dandelions are the most plentiful flowers of all.

5 good Comparing with the Adjective I read a good book.
Here is a sentence * that uses the adjective good. Good tells what kind of book. Suppose I wanted to compare this book with one other book. I might say..* I can’t say gooder, but I also can’t say more good. Do you know what I would say? So, here is * something important to remember. Suppose I wanted to compare this book to all other books I have read. I might say..* I can’t say goodest, but I also can’t say most good. Do you know what I would say? So here is * another important thing to remember. Now let’s check out the word… This book is _______ than the last book I read. Good becomes better when comparing two things. This is the _________ book I have ever read! Good becomes best when comparing more than two things.

6 bad Comparing with the Adjective This is a bad story by I. M. Dull.
Here is a sentence * that uses the adjective bad. Bad tells what kind of story. Suppose I wanted to compare this story with one other story. I might say..* I can’t say badder, but I also can’t say more bad. Do you know what I would say? So, here is * something important to remember. Suppose I wanted to compare this story to all her other stories. I might say..* I can’t say badest, but I also can’t say most bad. Do you know what I would say? So here is * another important thing to remember. It is _________ than her last story. Bad becomes worse when comparing two things. This may be the _____ story she has ever written. Bad becomes worst when comparing more than two things.
