4. Our 2013-2014 Accomplishments! We promoted our 10th 6th grade class!
Held our annual Arlene Hein Science Fair in March

137/516 intermediate students earned Principal’s Honor Roll with a 4.0 GPA ! 61 students earned this every trimester!
284/516 intermediate students earned District Honor Roll with GPA ! 174 students earned this every trimester!
Over 212 (up from 74 last year) students earned their 25-point lanyards and 272 (up 59 from last year) other medals were earned! We added 9 names to our 1,000 point plaque and added a third name to our 2000 point AR plaque! We even started a 5,000 point plaque!

Most important goals:
Learning to read
Learning to write
Becoming competent and confident in working with numbers.

The most important work of the early years is helping students to build skills and success in early reading, writing, speaking, listening, and mathematics. To a large extent, our work with students has not changed in this area.
They will still learn the sounds and letters of the alphabet;
They’ll learn to put letters and sounds together to make words;
They’ll learn to use their knowledge of sounds and the alphabet to write;
They’ll learn to derive meaning from what they read;
They’ll learn to count;
They’ll add and subtract;
They’ll learn to recognize, name, and manipulate shapes.
The DIFFERENCES that you may see include an encouragement to learn and use more varied vocabulary. They will speak in full sentences and will listen and talk to each other about what they’re learning. While they’ll still hear and read stories, they will also read about subjects of science, of places in our world, events of history, etc. Not only will they be asked to express their opinions, but they’ll be asked to give the reasoning that led to their formulation of opinion.

The former standards mainly called for math instruction to include Procedural Fluency – basically, learn the formula, process, and/or rule to solve a problem.
The Common Core State Standards continues to emphasize Procedural Fluency, but also includes emphasis on Conceptual Understanding (or the ability to comprehend mathematical concepts, operations, and relations) and Application and Modeling (or the ability to apply mathematics given different situations).
The inclusion of these three components is what we now use to define “rigor” in mathematics instruction.

EGUSD’s implementation plan of the Common Core State Standards includes the potential adoption of standards-aligned curriculum. Curriculum has already been adopted for mathematics.
State testing this school year will include student results, which the State will use as base data for schools and districts in measuring accountability and performance benchmarks.

Praise children for making an effort and encourage perseverance.
Help them develop the mindset that they should be proud of working hard and learning something new.
Use conversation starters that encourage students to explain why or how they know something.

EGUSD believes that we are a partner with families in the education of children.
Helping develop the mindset of positive learning and hard work is important to overall student success.
As students are being encouraged in the classroom to explain why and how they know something, the same can be helpful if reinforced at home.

magazines; sets of directions.
