1 Charity competition to design Sense’s Fence
Closing Date: 9 March 2015

2 Who are Sense Sense is a charity that provides support to enable deafblind children and adults to live as actively and independently as possible. They have lots of programmes to help deafblind people develop their skills and talents, grow in confidence and get the most out of life.

3 What is deafblindness? Deafblindness is a combination of sight and hearing loss that affects a person’s ability to communicate, to access all kinds of information, and to get around. Deafblindness is not just a deaf person who cannot see, or a blind person who cannot hear. The two impairments together increase the effects of each. Most deafblind people have some vision and hearing. In the UK there are over 250,000 children and adults who are deafblind. Source:

4 This is Chloe Making friends can be really difficult for a deafblind child like Chloe. Without the proper support, childhood can be a lonely time. But with the right support from Sense and lots of hard work and courage, Chloe has recently started school and now has two new best friends! When Chloe's mum, Jane was told that Chloe was not only deaf, but also couldn't see – she couldn't imagine what life for Chloe would be like. How would her little girl communicate? Would she be able to go to school? Would she make friends? It's been a long journey from that point, but recently Chloe's mum took her for her very first day at school. You can read about other children that Sense supports here:

5 What is this competition all about?
We would like to invite you to design our Sense charity ‘fence’. The winning fence design could be used on the course of one of the world's most famous horsing events - the Badminton Horse Trials. Sense are the official charity at Badminton this year and we would love to see the horses jumping over your winning design.

6 Why?? The winning fence design will actually be created as part of the cross country course… …which means it will be seen by hundreds of thousands of people around the world! And more people will learn about Sense and support the amazing work that we do!

7 Let’s have a go! Be as creative as you like! But remember…
It is fun, creative and eye catching! The design should have some relevance to Sense and the work that we do The horse has to be able to jump over it (or through it) The fence is solid and no parts can fall off if they are hit

8 And remember… It is Sense’s 60th anniversary year
Our main colours are purple and orange Keep it realistic and remember the horse has to be able to jump over the fence

9 Let us know how you’re getting on, we would love to see some photos of you designing your fence! Here’s some of ours…
