3 The Biography of Zheng He
Zheng He was born in 1371 in Kunyang, China, during the Ming Dynasty. The emperor during this period was Zhu Di, or Ming Chengzu. Zheng He started his voyages to the west in Every time Zheng He sailed to the west, he always had 208 ships with him of which 63 were treasure ships. The maximum number of people on the ships was about 28,568. He travelled to: Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka India, Saudi Arabia and Africa.

4 Zheng He’s Travels Zheng He’s first voyage was from He visited Champa (Vietnam), Java (Indonesia), Sumatra (Lhokseumawe), Lamuri (Banda Aceh), Calicut, Polembang (Palembang) and Malacca. His second voyage was from He visited Champa (Vietnam), Java (Indonesia), Siam (Thailand), Malacca, Lamuri (Banda Aceh), Cail, Cochin, Koyampadi, Jurfatten (Ahmedabad), Cailcut and Ceylon (Sri Lanka). His third voyage was from He visited Champa (Vietnam), Java (Indonesia), Malacca, Sumatra (Lhokseumawe), Ceylon, Quilon, Cailcut and Lamuri (Banda Aceh).

5 Zheng He’s Travels His fourth voyage was from He visited Champa (Vietnam), Java (Indonesia), Polembang (Palembang), Malacca, Pahang, Kelantan (Kota Bahru), Sumatra (Lhokseumawe), Aru (Belawan), Lamuri, Cail, Cochin, Cailcut, Ormus (Hormuz), Maldives and Ceylon. His fifth voyage was from He visited Champa, Java, Polembang (Palembang), Malacca, Pahang, Sumatra (Lhokseumawe), Lamuri (Banda Aceh), Ceylon, Cochin, Shaliwanni, Calicut, Sana (Mukalla), Ormus (Hormuz), Aden, Magadozu (Mogadishu), Brawa (Brava), Malindi, Malodives, Koyampadi.

Risk Taker: Zheng He was a risk taker because he went to a lot of places that he didn’t know. Inquirer: He was an inquirer because he discovered new places for his country. Principled: He was a principled person because he did the right thing for his country. Balanced: He was not a balanced person because he always worked and didn’t have enough rest.

12 Zheng He – a significant explorer?
1. Why do we consider Zheng He to be signifcant? Because he explored places and then gave the map of his findings to the emperor. In 1433, Zheng He died during his 7th voyage. His death meant the end of all voyages to the west. 2. How did Zheng He impact on places he went? He traded Chinese goods to other countries. Zheng He opened up trade routes and developed relationships between China and other countries. 3. Why did Zheng He travel? He was captured by the Chinese army and then was asked to help the army that captured him.

4. What was Zheng He looking for? He was looking for land and goods that were expensive for trading. 5. Did Zheng He’s exploits change the way people lived at the time of his exploration? He changed the way people lived by developing trade relationships with other countries. 6. Has Zheng He’s exploits changed the way, or the places where, people live today? He helped the Chinese people to find new places to trade with and live.

This is Franco’s boat. It’s based on one of Zheng He’s treasure boats. Zheng He’s fleet had 208 ships and 63 of them were treasure ships.
