1 Smart Systems for Internet of Things The next wave!
Roberto Zafalon Technology Programmes, Director R&D and Public Affairs, Italy STMicroelectronics EPOSS FORUM 2014 Torino September 25th, 2014

2 What is IoT? first proposed by Kevin Ashton in 1999
The Internet of Things connects every day consumer objects and industrial equipment onto the network, enabling information gathering and management of these devices via software in order to increase efficiency, enable new services, or achieve other health, safety, or environmental benefits. Kevin Ashton, a British technologist in 1999 was Executive Director at MIT’s Auto-ID Center, an RFID research consortium Wired 2013 talk on YouTube IoT: The term was first proposed by Kevin Ashton in 1999, when he was Executive Director at MIT’s Auto-ID Center, an RFID research consortium.

3 The Internet Waves The 1990s: fixed Internet connected 1 billion users via PCs The 2000s: mobile Internet connected 3 billion users via smartphones (on its way to 6 billion), IoT is emerging as a third bigger Internet wave IoT is expected to connect 50 billion “things” to the Internet by 2020! [1 min] The IoT is also gaining momentum through the cloud and by 2020 there will be nearly as many machine-to-machine (M2M) connections as there are people on earth. E.g. Smart cars will have nearly four M2M modules per car. 7.5 Billion world population on 2020

4 By 2020 the Internet traffic will shift dramatically!
Most of the IP traffic will originate from other than personal computers (PCs). Wi-Fi traffic will exceed wired traffic and Full HD video will generate more traffic than standard video. According to a recent report issued by Cisco, the number of connected devices (i.e. through IPv6 and evolution) will grow to some 50 billion devices by The internet traffic will be close to 44 Zettabytes (i.e. 10^21 bytes)! In the Football World Cup in Brazil (june 2014), the Video streaming and internet broadcasting have generated 4.3 exabytes (i.e. 10^18 bytes) of IP traffic, which is 3X the monthly IP traffic typically generated by Brazil. 1 ZB = 10007bytes = 1021bytes = 1000 exabytes = 1 billion terabytes.

5 connected to the physical world via ubiquitous sensors! [1 min]
The Internet of Things connected to the physical world via ubiquitous sensors! [1 min] New Things to augment life Existing Things augmented The Internet of things: products that Leveraging the Internet to make things smarter, easier to use and connected. All Major segments: Industrials:Consumer:Automotive Impact: Defining new business’s: new applications: new players and business models.

6 Barriers to IoT’s adoption
Security concerns – Security concerns escalate to a whole new level, given the potential for privacy violations or safety issues due to the ability to remotely manipulate physical assets Regulation and compliance – as many IoT implementations are being mandated by the governments, such as the eCall connected car requirement in Europe, the rail safety act in the US, or smart grid mandates around the world Standards –business is hesitant to invest in connecting assets that may become “stranded” if the communications standards will change. For example, smart gas meters, although technologically easy, are very critical and expensive to deploy, as they go in volumes Ease of use – Some of the early success stories in IoT have benefited from their ease of use, such as the Nest thermostat (acquired by Google). eHealth is much more complicated!

7 Convergence toward “all IP” world
Vertical markets profiles opportunities Complementary services, e.g. resource discovery , , HP GP, G3 PRIME PLC, BTLE, DECT… TCP, UDP Smart Energy Profile 2.0 Smart-grid; personal Health; Other Profiles - Resource Management Discovery Group comm ... HTTP, COAP IPv6 (6LoWPAN, RPL) IP stack has become the universal technology for networking and applications PHY/MACs will remain in continuous evolution based on application and regulatory needs

8 The IP for Smart Objects Toolbox
8 6lo: IPv6 over Networks of Resource-constrained Nodes (6lo) The IP for Smart Objects Toolbox Over the past few years, industry developed the standards enabling IP based applications on smart objects: 6LoWPAN – An adaptation layer to transport IPv6 over low power wireless communication links (RFC 6282 for ), support for other links (e.g. DECT ULE, BTLE) is under development at the IETF RPL – An IPv6 routing protocol for Low-Power and Lossy Networks (standardized as RFC 6550 (and related), Adopted by SEP 2.0, WAVENIS, P1901.2) Security – Proven protocols, available at multiple layers above IP, enabling end-to-end security, e.g. TLS and DTLS CoAP – An application layer protocol for resource-constrained internet devices: new protocol, RESTful, designed for simplified integration of smart objects with the web  Final draft submitted for publication

9 Why IoT should be different from pervasive computing or similar stuff??
Today major companies have come out with real products that enable aspects of autonomous decision and interface/sensoring the environment. Additionally, the enabling semiconductors including sensors, microcontrollers and communications chips (e.g., Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, ZigBee) have seen ultra low-power capability and steep price declines that now make connected end points affordable at price less than $100. Android is in!

10 ST fosters innovation on IoT
SPIRIT: As we drove MEMS adoption by the mobile phone market five years ago, ST is unique in its having all the sensor technologies, together with the extremely low-power SPIRIT1 RF wireless radio for home, office and industrial use, and our Bluetooth Low Energy radio for wearable applications,  to drive the IoT market development and create the next MEMS wave.” Designs application around the STM32 family of ARM® Cortex®-M microcontroller is full of opportunities.
