1 Predicting Products of Chemical Reactions

2 Predicting Products Synthesis Reactions
To know you have a synthesis reaction your reactants will be two simple elements/compounds The product will be a compound made of the two reactants Use your ionic bonding formula writing skills to balance charges to write the product formula

3 Predicting Products Synthesis Examples: Mg + O2 ? 2Mg + O2 2MgO
C + H2 ? C + 2H2 CH4

4 Predicting Products Decomposition Reactions Decomposition Examples
To know you have a decomposition reaction, you will start with one reactant There will be two products created, usually the component elements but not always Decomposition Examples H2O ? 2H2O 2H2 + O2 H2CO3 ? H2CO3 CO2 + H2O

5 Predicting Products Combustion Reactions Combustion Example
To know you have a combustion, one of your reactants will the oxygen and the other will contain carbon The products will always be carbon dioxide and water! So easy! Combustion Example C4H8 + O2 ? C4H8 + 6O2 4CO2 + 4H2O

6 Predicting Products Single Replacement Reactions
You know you have a single replacement, when you have a compound and an element as your reactants Not all single replacement reactions will occur Use a metal activity series to determine if a reaction will occur. To occur, the lone element must be more reactive than the metal in the compound If it will, cations (metals) will trade places to create the product. Use your ionic formula writing skills to get the new formulas correct

7 Predicting Products Single Replacement Examples Mg + FeCl2 ?
Mg is more reactive than Fe, so it will replace Mg Mg + FeCl2 MgCl2 + Fe AlCl3 + Cs ? Cs is more reactive than Al, so it will replace Al AlCl3 + 3Cs 3CsCl + Al

8 Predicting Products Double Replacement Reactions
You know you have a double replacement reaction when your reactants are two compounds For this reaction to occur, a solid must be formed as a product For the products, the cations (metals) will “switch partners” Use the solubility rules to determine if one of the products will be a solid

9 Predict Products Double Replacement Examples Na2CO3 + Ca(NO3)2  ?
Predict the products: NaNO3 + CaCO3 Use the Solubility Rules: NaNO3 is soluble, but CaCO3 is insoluble so the reaction will occur Reaction: Na2CO3 + Ca(NO3)2  2NaNO3 + CaCO3
