2. What is a political Continuum?
A range of political values that help us determine where we might fit politically. A person’s views on the issues help determine where they fall on the political spectrum. The labels used on the spectrum are not pure categories, but they make up a continuum, or value line, and citizens and politicians fall somewhere on that line depending on what they believe.

3. Factors That Determine Placement
Two major factors shape political views. 1.) The first is how much change a person is willing to have within their society and government. 2.) The second deals with how much government involvement in the economy a person calls for.
These factors place a person somewhere on a grid, which can be used to measure where a person stands in relation to each other and the issues.

4. First you need definitions of these political terms:

To see where you stand, you would have to figure out where you stand on a number of social (people-related), economic (money-related), and political (governmental) issues.

An organized group of people with common values and beliefs who try to get their candidates elected to political office

His opponents during the election of tried to label him a "jackass" for his “stubborn” populist beliefs and slogan, "Let the people rule."
Jackson was entertained by the notion and ended up using it to his advantage on his campaign posters.

Explain to students that political parties exist because people with common values and beliefs are more effectively able to express their ideals in groups as opposed to individually. Ask them to consider the following question: If you were trying to influence a political leader, or even the manger of the department store you worked in, do you think it would be better to have others working toward the same goal with you, or would it be better to “go it alone?

Cartoonist Thomas Nast drew a donkey clothed in Lion’s skin, scaring away all the animals at the zoo. One of the animals, the elephant, was labeled “The Republican Vote.”
The elephant symbol stuck and has been kept ever since.
Political cartoonist Thomas Nast was also responsible for the Republican Party elephant. In a cartoon that appeared in Harper's Weekly in 1874, Nast drew a donkey clothed in lion's skin, scaring away all the animals at the zoo. One of those animals, the elephant, was labeled "The Republican Vote." That's all it took for the elephant to become associated with the Republican Party.

Its purpose is to get their candidate elected.

Example – I agree with the Democrat’s party ‘plank’ (value) that flag burning is political speech and should be protected. Although I would never burn an American flag, I do not wish for the government to limit my ability to voice my opinion about the federal government. The only limits on speech I wish to be created are those that prevent others from being hurt.
 I agree with the Republican's party Pro-Life view (value) because my moral and religious beliefs tell me it is wrong to take the life of an innocent, unborn child. I believe that every life is precious.)

In your groups, research one of he political parties listed below. Identify and describe four of their political planks. In a brief statement, explain how this party is different from the two primary parties. Tea Party Patriots - Libertarian Party - Constitution Party - Natural Law Party -
Third – parties are not true contenders for winning the presidency. But they are important because they challenge the ideas of the larger parties and can sway the results of major elections.
These parties can also gain respect and become a major political party.
