1 Physics – Wed, August 28 Find your assigned seat & begin quietly reading Syllabus & Introduction, Materials, Rules, etc Please tell your teacher if you have a nickname you prefer. Asst a: Multiplying with Significant Figures: columns C&E 1-15 (must show calc answer & then correct sig fig answer only) AND B 1-15 (must be stacked as example shown in class) – due tomorrow, and quiz Fri! Asst b: Information Survey – instructions 1-5 As they walk in, I remind them to find their seat, and to start quietly reading their Syllabus. 5 minutes after the bell rings, I go over the following with them (in 5-10 min): copying HW :( I actually do mean EXACTLY what that materials list has on it (although I will give them their first red pen) AND it is SRONGLY STRONGLY advised for them to have their binder tomorrow, because I’ll be handing out 400 things That’s the highest percentage of tests they are likely ever to have seen; copying HW won’t help them! Hand-out Sig Fig paper, do #C1 with them with calc on doc cam. Tell them to write calc answer & then correct sig-fig answer. Put in terms of which lab partner didn’t measure good enough, and that’s why we always “guestimate” in between smallest mark on measuring device! Let them work (you wander) until minutes left in class. MAKE THEM STOP, and go on to B1. Tell them its new & they haven’t seen it before! Stack the problem as you see in Kim’s key, lining up decimals. Get calc answer. Cross out insignificant columns from right to left, emphasizing lab partners again. Encourage them to work on this column until end of class. 5 minutes ‘till end of class, hand out Information Survey + 1 blank paper per kid. Talk to kids who didn’t have Trig last year - I’ll give you your list. (ie: did they do their HW? How did it go, ask them to bring it tomorrow)

2 Physics – Thurs, August 29 Organize Binders – copy today’s agenda!, dividers, handouts, materials (pencils, red pens, highlighters, calculator, protractor & ruler) Introduction to Webpage Answers to last night’s HW (quickly) - do tomorrow instead Together do tonight's asst: #11, then #5a Asst a: worksheet due tom. (there’s a quiz!) FLM (top) = Bolded problems in 3,5,6,7,10; Best-fitting bottom #11-14 (see examples posted on website) Asst b: Information survey – instructions 6-10 I have 400 handouts for them today; all things that go in their HANDOUT section; I’ll always make copies for both of us! However, as soon as the bell rings, the FIRST thing you ask them to do is to take out a lined piece of paper, and copy today’s agenda. When they do it, they are allowed to take short-cuts, such as… (it should take no more than 3 minutes) 8/29 1. Organize Binders 2. See Webpage 3. Start tonight’s asst (or “do #11 and 5a”) 5. Asst a: Best-fitting (3,5,6,7,10 bolded) & FLM 11-14 Asst b: Information Survey 6-10 hand out binder rubric - goes in front of first divider; hand out all other papers that go in “Reference Section”; have them label dividers (by 20 after, at the latest, you should be moving on!) QUICKLY show them the link to the Physics webpage, and how they’ll get hints to tonight’s HW if they need it! (You need to build a link to it in your own moodle page or on the DUSD SchoolWires page :) Do all of #11 with them step-by-step. Tell the non-calc kids to get out & USE best-fitting instructions we handed out earlier. Let them work until 10 minutes before then end of class, and then do #5a with them. Stress they may do Dimensional Analysis any way a previous science teacher has taught them, and it may look different from yours! If you don’t quite finish, remind them to visit the webpage! Collect non-Trig kids HW!

3 Physics – Fri, August 30 Don’t forget to copy today’s agenda! You may abbreviate slightly. Go over both HWs (collect! make sure the title & date assigned is on both!) Quiz: FLM & Best-fitting (always use sig figs!!) Asst: Algebra & Trig Review Algebra Review – circled problems on front, except 7,9,27,33,37; 40&45 we’ll do together Tues. Trig Review – 5-23 (on back of Algebra; #15-20 use SOHCAHTOA; #21-23 use sin1, cos1, and tan1) Information survey – instructions (it is due, fully completed, Tuesday) MUST have ruler & protractor Tuesday! Get a graphing calculator too, if you don’t have one, or come talk to me! Remind them to copy the agenda each day for a bit; ultimately they’ll do it automatically, and you’ll NEVER have to deal with absent students! :) I'm going to hand out HW while they're writing the daily agenda/schedule, so they all have it. (that way they can make chicken scratches about the asst on it if they want.) They correct in red pen ... Read off answers to sig figs column C; ask for questions (answer verbally, with them telling you how many sig figs each data point has). Then read off answers to column E, same as C. Finally, read off answers to column B, ask for questions (work out any on the doc cam) Collect the sig fig asst as soon as we finish going over it. (Person in front row sorts into 2 stacks: worksheet & assts - which should each have a title and date assigned on it!) Hand-out keys to FLM & best-fitting (note there’s a mistake on the back of the key!) I pick up the first 2 stacks after I've handed out the keys to FLM & best-fitting, and have them working. By 35 minutes past (at the latest) you should be collecting the last 3 stacks (there's the keys to collect; have them pass them up by row in numerical order. Get them ready for the quiz. I'm going to let them use their own calculator for the quiz (each class has its own version, so its harder to cheat.) They also get to use their best-fit instructions if they need them. ("That damn band camp last year!") **I sort through the keys while they're taking their quiz to make sure I have them all back in numerical order. When they bring you their completed quiz, hand them the HW, which they quietly wok on ‘till the end of the period (or everyone finishes quiz)

Grade own quiz in red pen Brief lecture notes on solving “system of equations” Collect HW & Information Survey (titled & dated) Asst: Start Vectors Packet On your HOMEWORK paper (not in your binder!), take good notes on pages 1 and 2 On that same paper, do example problem that is on page 3 On the bottom of page 4, do addition problems P1-P3 and P5-P8 using the vectors (“set 1”) listed to the left. Note answers are listed on the last page! I ALWAYS let them grade their own quizzes, since they’re so few points, and that’s how they learn. I have keys for these already. Recollect so you can record their scores. Lecture notes: I do it as I was taught in college, which is that you skip a line directly after the day’s agenda and write the lecture notes there. Mary used to do them as SHE did in college, which was to have all lecture notes on a separate sheet on paper, in the back of this binder section. We can talk about pros & cons. Whichever system you decide on, I grab a kid’s binder, plop it on the doc cam, and show them what I mean…. Do # 40 with them using matrices. Have them write the problem in their notes, then put up your calc and go with them step-by-step through it. Encourage them to write down steps in their notes if they’ve forgotten how to do it. When graphing intersecting lines, solve both equations for y (use parentheses when dividing). Plug into y1 = & y2 = in graphing calculator. Then ... See AP thing I ed you for helpful hints on how to do this stuff :) Now do #45 both ways in your lecture notes!

6 Wed, Sept 4 Don’t forget to copy today’s & every day's agenda! Sr’s copy tomorrow’s as well…. Work on vectors (day 1 if you didn’t get them all; move on to day 2 if you did) Both assts will be collected tomorrow, stapled together Vectors Quiz – last 25 minutes of class Asst: vector set 2 w/ graphical method P3-P5, P7-P9 (do NOT convert the angles to 0-360, do them in the NWES system!) I give them a big speech about “Are you lost & confused? Well, here’s what you SHOULD have done this weekend, and what you HAVE to learn to do in college…FIND HELP FROM ANOTHER STUDENT” Then I let them hop to it. I’ve got quizzes (and answer keys) somewhere in my file cabinet at school; need to find them … Thursday, Sept 5th, 2013 (Sr Kick Off 2nd-5th) Do problems P1-P9, skip P6 using set 3 & the graphical method.

7 Fri, Sept 6 (rally) Correct quiz 2 (if time) Turn in HW
Stapled together in this order: notes, example problem, set 1, set 2, set 3 (Make sure there’s a line separating sets, if you did them on the same page) Lecture notes: component method Asst: Redo set 1 w/ component method (tonight you may skip #6, #8) #9 started together: Usually takes less than 15 minutes to go over & recollect quizzes. Emphasize any scores below 70% need to get help, as it will be on the unit test! Then about 20 minutes lecture notes. I actually usually use the problem I gave them on the quiz for the lecture notes on the component method. Note that I added the instructions I give the AP kids to the left of the next 2 slides, so its easier to follow along. Then I have them get out their HW paper and we do #9 together. Sometimes they have to finish it at home, sometimes we do finish it in class. Depends on level of class.

You can keep your binders in class if you like 10-15 minutes for help on component method Quiz: Component method Asst: Vectors set 2 with components Tonight you may skip #6 also, AND #7 Donation Letter out (Thurs Back To School night) I actually give them 20 minutes of class time to work on HW, study ask questions, etc. During this time: remind them I grade on completion, and mostly right. I don’t grade on correctness though.BUT, it will show up on their test/quiz results if they are copying the HW and/or not understanding and get the answers correct. The quiz is actually BOTH methods combined! (see next slides) Start at latest by half past. Again, I have keys for them. As soon as they hand you their quiz, I let them quietly start their HW.

After we correct it, how would you find the equilibriant of the problem? Note: If you did not do well, you MUST come in for help! We are mostly done working on vectors in class, but they are 40% of the first unit test!

Copy the figure below A = 3 km East, B = 4 km North Elephant walked A+B in 2 hours The distance is the total path walked (a scalar) What is this? The displacement (a vector) is the straight difference between the start point and the end point “as the crow flies”

THIS IS A SCALAR The velocity is defined to be the displacement / time THIS IS A VECTOR, so don't forget direction!!!! These 4 questions about the elephant are question #2 on your first unit test, but with a more complicated vector problem than A+B in hor/vert directions!

Question #1 on your first unit test asks for the definitions of distance vs displacement; and the formulas for speed & velocity It also asks which are scalars & which are vectors And is asks the following to make sure you get it … (see next slide)

23 A bumblebee flew 56 meters along a long, twisting path only to land on a flower 1.0 meter due east of the point from which it started. If the entire trip took 30 minutes, what was its distance, displacement, average speed and average velocity? One of my favorite examples, similar to what they see in their HW, and one they may use on their unit test if they choose. (I even suggest that!)

24 Let’s start #7 and #11 together
7) Calculate the average speeds in km/yr of Mercury (and Earth, Saturn, and Pluto) in orbit around the sun. Use your astronomical data handout to obtain their "mean distance from the sun" (the radius of the assumed circular orbit) and their "period of revolution" (the time it takes them to go around once). THINK CIRCUMFERENCE! (a) At exactly 1:00PM a car traveling WEST at a constant speed of 24 km/hr is 11 km WEST of the school. Where will the car be at 3:30PM? (b) If instead the car was 11 km EAST of the school at 1:00PM, but still traveling WEST at a constant speed of 24 km/hr, where will the car be at 3:30PM? DRAW A GOOD ANNOTATED PICTURE!

Domino...” Collect rest of data if needed Do graph, best-fit quadratic, find max; get my signature/stamp on the sketch of graph on your paper Do R&C BOOKS OUT! Put your name in your book & take it home! Pass out HW – YOU MUST MEASURE IN BETWEEN THE DASHES on your ruler; ie to the hundredth of a cm (or the 10th of a mm)! 39 NOTE: Physics test policy: If you are absent for more than 1 unit test, you will be given a full essay test as a make-up. If you are absent for only the test period, our “reasonable time period” is an hour for an hour, so the test will have to be taken within an hour of the period you missed. If you are absent for the whole day, you must take it the next day after school, since it’s a day for a day. (See above about being absent for more than 1 test!) Any school field trips or sporting events: the policy clearly states that the test must be taken BEFORE the absence.
