I’d like to introduce our EFL course, Quick Smart English and its origins, perhaps by introducing myself
I’ve been in language publishing – mainly EFL - for over 30 years

A few years ago I sold my original company, Chancerel to Ernst Klett Verlag, one of the two main educational publishers in Germany

Ken Wilson and Mary Tomalin: – Ken was founder of English Teaching Theatre, writer of songs, plays sketches for TV. EFL writer and presenter of many courses for Oxford UP, Macmillan. Mary writes courses and readers for China, the Middle East and Europe published by Penguin, Macmillan.
Rebecca Robb-Benne: MA, Applied Linguistics, Edinburgh; teacher of French, German and English in Germany; writes for Brookemead ELT, Macmillan, Oxford UP and Cornelsen, Berlin; lives in Denmark.
Joanne Collie: Taught English, French, and Literature at Canadian and Turkish universities; currently University of Warwick, UK; writes for Brookemead ELT, Nijgh Versluys, Netherlands, Klett & Balmer, Cambridge UP and Loescher, Italy.

Language teachers: using materials dictated by language syllabus
Cross-curricular language – using content from various curriculum areas
Language teachers: using materials in parallel with other disciplines

28. Key features of CLIL
Language learning and content learning supporting each other – subject integration, making more than the sum of its parts
Authenticity – using current media to bring global issues into the classroom
Active learning – students exchange views among themselves
Student centered – teachers are facilitators while students learn by doing
Building on student’s own knowledge, skills, attitudes, interests and experience.
Challenging students to be creative, intellectually adventurous, to develop as articulate citizens as well as linguists.

29. CLIL – what age & levels?
Accessibility – topics should be adapted according to age and sophistication level of students
Authenticity - language tasks should be relevant to the age / ability level of students (QSE - 3 levels)
Vocabulary – CLIL gives reasons for students to widen and deepen their own vocabulary
As globalization affects everyone, CLIL helps to develop:
Political awareness, citizenship
Economic awareness
Historical awareness
Cultural (and inter-cultural) awareness

32. CLIL: today’s topics in QSE
Cross-curricular topics of the modern syllabus: Business Studies, Health and Fitness, Psychology, Law, ICT.
Traditional curriculum subjects: Mathematics, Sciences, Geography, History.
Often the students will know as much (or even more) about the topic as the language teacher – good!
They talk to the class about the topic in English. They are the experts in the topic (and the language).
They discover and use the vocabulary they already have (science, technology, social life, computers - cognates)
Students are learning by doing:
