23 QSE - 10 step Units Student’s Book Page 4 – Step 8 CLIL

24 CLIL: it’s not new (Content and Language Integrated Learning)
All teachers are teachers of language Source: Bullock, 1975 Linguistic content is inseparable from linguistic expression. Source: Mohan, 1986 We use language to learn as well as to communicate. Source: McGuiness, 1999 In the CLIL curriculum, it is the subject matter which determines the language to be learned. Source: CLIL in Austria, 2005

25 CLIL: The 4 Cs What is CLIL? The 4Cs Teaching Framework
Content (subject matter, projects, themes) Communication (language and language awareness) Cognition (thinking about what is being said and reacting to it) Culture (citizenship, personal development, awareness of global issues – economic, historical, political) Source: Dr Do Coyle, University of Nottingham 1999

26 CLIL works in 3 ways: Language of learning – analysis of content, grammar, vocabulary, structures, syllabus Language for learning – cognitive skills – listening, speaking Language through learning – developing thinking skills, general knowledge, broader vocabulary, imagination, creativity, new directions (ICT, widening horizons, intellectual risk-taking), self-confidence, fluency and literacy Source: Dr Do Coyle, University of Nottingham 1999

27 Various types of CLIL Language-led – using content (topics) to illustrate various language points Language teachers: using materials dictated by language syllabus Cross-curricular language – using content from various curriculum areas Language teachers: using materials in parallel with other disciplines Bi-lingual education Subject teachers: (sometimes with language teachers) using full subject curriculum in the target language. Source: Dellar and Price, OUP 2007

28 Key features of CLIL Language learning and content learning supporting each other – subject integration, making more than the sum of its parts Authenticity – using current media to bring global issues into the classroom Active learning – students exchange views among themselves Student centered – teachers are facilitators while students learn by doing Building on student’s own knowledge, skills, attitudes, interests and experience. Challenging students to be creative, intellectually adventurous, to develop as articulate citizens as well as linguists. Source: Mehisto, Marsh, Frigols, Macmillan 2008

29 CLIL – what age & levels? Accessibility – topics should be adapted according to age and sophistication level of students Authenticity - language tasks should be relevant to the age / ability level of students (QSE - 3 levels) Vocabulary – CLIL gives reasons for students to widen and deepen their own vocabulary As globalization affects everyone, CLIL helps to develop: Political awareness, citizenship Economic awareness Historical awareness Cultural (and inter-cultural) awareness

30 CLIL: The ultimate communicative methodology
“CLIL is an approach to bilingual education in which both curriculum and content – such as science or geography – and English are taught together… Hence it is a means of teaching curriculum subjects through the medium of the language still being learned” “CLIL can also be regarded … as a means of teaching English through the study of a specialist content” “CLIL is regarded … as the ultimate communicative methodology” Source: Graddol, English Next, British Council, 2006

31 Coyle’s claims from CLIL research:
Raises linguistic competence and confidence Raises teacher and learner expectations Involves risk-taking and problem-solving Motivates and encourages independence Improves L1 literacy Encourages linguistic spontaneity Develops study skills, concentration Positive attitudes, gender issues motivation Develops thinking skills Puts culture back on the agenda Increases vocabulary learning skills

32 CLIL: today’s topics in QSE
Cross-curricular topics of the modern syllabus: Business Studies, Health and Fitness, Psychology, Law, ICT. Traditional curriculum subjects: Mathematics, Sciences, Geography, History. Often the students will know as much (or even more) about the topic as the language teacher – good! They talk to the class about the topic in English. They are the experts in the topic (and the language). They discover and use the vocabulary they already have (science, technology, social life, computers - cognates) Students are learning by doing: “Tell me and I’ll remember for an hour; Show me and I’ll remember for a day; But let me do it and I’ll remember it forever. Source: Chinese proverb

"…In general I like this course… I also enjoyed the Unit about art… We even played a moot court and I litigated the dispute from the part of the Greek side and presented arguments why the marbles should be returned to Greece...” Anastasia, student “The topics are quite common, but the authors approach them from a different, unexpected angle… Teamwork tasks are creative and differ from the usual format” Elena, teacher ” … discussions and debates are very easy to follow from a teacher’s standpoint, and are quite logically connected.
