4 Language of Rounding “Rounding to the nearest ten” means the ten will stay the same or move up to the next ten. The other numbers to the right of the ten will become 0s. The ones numbers 1, 2, 3, or 4 will allow the ten to stay the same. The ones numbers 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9 will make the ten move up to the next number. The same procedure is followed regardless of which place value is being rounded.

5 Place Value Example of rounding in which the ten stays the same. This is often referred to as “rounding down.” Round 56,912 to the nearest ten. Ten Thousands Thousands Hundreds Tens Ones 5 6 9 1 2

6 Place Value Example of rounding in which the ten moves up one. This is often referred to as “rounding up.” Round 56,917 to the nearest ten. Ten Thousands Thousands Hundreds Tens Ones 5 6 9 1 7 2

7 Concept Definitions “Rounding to the nearest tenth” means the tenth will stay the same or move up to the next tenth. The other numbers to the right of the tenth will become 0s.
