3 1st GOAL: Understand spectra.
ANSWER NOW: (You will turn this in) Write, discuss, sketch, label – somehow communicate your knowledge and understanding of the electromagnetic spectrum. If you don’t think you have one, write/discuss/sketch/label a rainbow instead. Tell me everything you can. 1st GOAL: Understand spectra. Vocabulary: wavelength, spectra, continuous spectrum, emission spectrum, absorption spectrum, black-body spectrum, electron, energy levels, excited, Doppler effect, red shift, blue shift, metallicity 6:35 (40 minutes) Heat= color. Black body = collisions. Even with elastic collisions, you lose some energy. Energy = light The nature of light. Light is energy. Photons are wavicles Atoms – electrons – energy levels. Wavelength – diff amounts of energy image page 103 7:15 (15 minutes) Break7:30 (30 minutes) Continuous spectrum – black body Planck Curve Emission Spectrum Light Decoders Absorption Spectrum Types of Stars/Types of Spectra Metallicity – how come there’s more than just Hydrogen lines? 5 Different wavelengths are different colors.
Different wavelengths are different energies. Different colors are different energies. If you look directly at a heat source – you get ALL POSSIBLE COLORS – continuous spectrum or “black body” spectrum. If you look at a heated gas you get some colors because it’s not heat, it’s excited electrons.
