Pollination & Fertilization
Mrs. Taylor 6th grade Science

In the Life Cycle of a Flowering Plant there are two very important processes – Pollination & Fertilization.

Pollination During the process of pollination a pollen cell (male sex cell) from the anther of the stamen must be moved to the stigma of the pistil.

Pollination Diagram The Red arrow shows the pollen from the anther moving to the stigma (top of) the pistil. This movement of pollen is called Pollination.

Pollination occurs with the help of
Pollinators Pollination occurs with the help of Pollinators like…. Bees Butterflies Birds Other insects Wind also helps pollination occur by carrying pollen from one flower to another

Fertilization Once the pollen has been moved to the stigma and pollination has occurred the process of Fertilization can begin.

Fertilization First a pollen tube is created that allows the pollen to move down the style of the pistil to the ovary. Once in the ovary the pollen cell ( male sex cell) can join with the ovules (female egg cell). The joining of these two sex cells is called fertilization. Once the ovule is fertilized a seed will develop!

Watch fertilization in action!

Watch this video clip to review the parts of a flower, pollination, and fertilization.
