Unit 11 The Parts of a Flower
2
If you look carefully at a flower, you will see that it is made up of many different parts.
Each part has an important job to do.
3
Sepals sepal The sepals protect the flower before it opens.
4
Petals petals The petals attract pollinating insects with their bright color and attractive scent.
5
Stamen The stamens are the male part of the flower.
The plant makes pollen in the top part of the stamen called the anther. The filament is the part of the stamen that holds up the anther. stamen anther filament
6
Pistil pistil The pistil is the female part of the flower.
7
Stigma The stigma is the top of the pistil.
The pollen from another flower collects on the stigma’s sticky surface.
8
Style The style is the neck of the pistil.
The pollen tube travels down the style toward the ovary.
9
Ovary The ovary is the base of the pistil.
The ovary protects the ovules. ovary
10
Ovary Continued Pollen tube The pollen tube travels to the ovules and fertilization takes place. Now the ovules will develop into seeds. ovary ovule
