WE ARE LEARNING TO... Understand why and how performers learn through observation Understand the different components of Bandura’s model Apply this model to practical sporting situations

Learning by copying others because we wish to be socially accepted NORMS BEHAVIOURS ATTITUDES CONVENTIONS DEMONSTRATIONS

Banduras Observational Learning Model (Social Learning Theory) Student Task – In pairs, one person is to perform any skill with the tennis ball. The other person then has to copy that skill. What factors does the person carrying out the demonstration need to consider to ensure the action is replicated to the best possible level?

This form of learning relies on watching and imitating the actions of others Learning can only take place if the following are present: ATTENTION – The learner must pay full attention to the demonstration RETENTION – The learner must practice the movement in order to retain the knowledge (mental rehearsal is useful) MOTOR REPRODUCTION – The learner must have the maturity, confidence and physical ability to replicate the demonstration MOTIVATION – The learner must want to learn the skill (Copy Fig 9.11 p. 111) Read and highlight learning and performance

Task 1 Relate this performance to Bandura’s Observational model of learning Video Task Task 2 What would be the problem with asking YOU to replicate this performance?

Relevancy to the Learner – An elite performer may not be appropriate to demonstrate to a beginner as they may set too high a standard Accuracy of the demonstration – If the learner views a flawed model then they may acquire a faulty technique Status of the role model – If this is high then the learner is more likely to attend (but bear relevancy in mind) Comply with social norms – similar in age, gender, ability
