4 Reporting Accidents & Ill-health
All accidents/incidents and ill-health should be reported to your supervisor and tutor. For investigation to establish the cause. To identify trends and learn lessons. The difference between health and safety Health issues relate to longer term problems, stress, respiratory Asbestos – MDF – chemicals Question – why report accidents & ill health? Question – why investigate accidents & ill health? Example from our quarterly/end of year reports

5 Types of Injuries & Ill - Health
Broken limbs Lacerations Sprains to back and joints Bruises Ill – Health Skin complaints Stress Respiratory problems Hearing loss In juries are easy to see Some strains and sprains can cause longer term health problems Health issues often show no signs or symptoms for months or years Skin irritants do not always show symptoms immediately – sensitised - wear gloves

6 First Aid Identify who your first - aiders are at work.
If an accident occurs it will save time if you know where to locate your nearest first - aider. Report to your first aider if: You are injured and are able If you witness an accident If you are asked to do so (in cases of accident, where others are assisting) If you know of any first aid equipment problems, eg faulty or missing

The College is prepared for all known emergencies (disaster recovery plan)

8 Emergency Control Measures
Smoke detectors Alarms/ Fire fighting Systems Training Evacuation Main aim to get people out of the building safely and quickly To assemble in appropriate assembly areas. Evacuation Marshalls Fire fighting

9 Emergency Evacuation Wheelchair Users
Risk assessment Refuges Evac chairs Transfer from own chair Evacuation from refuge Plan to risk assess all wheelchair users early in the academic year Disabled students may want the following information given separately: Familiarise yourselves with the refuges The transfer from own wheelchair to EVAC chair is by sliding board The evacuation from the refuges is by trained staff

Technical Many staff are trained in evacuation responsibilities Please assist by evacuating to the assembly points and staying there until the all clear.

11 Your Responsibilities
Read fire action notices in each area to make yourself aware of the assembly points. Make sure you are aware of fire exits, call points and where fire extinguishers are kept. Take note of any health & safety information that is communicated to you. Familiarise yourselves with the evacuation routes and assembly points Do not attempt to use extinguishes until trained to do so

Code of conduct Emergency contacts Hundreds of trips are taken each year Please follow the instructions of your trip organiser and adhere to the code of conduct

13 Safety Signs A blue sign is mandatory and means you must do what it says.

14 Safety Signs A yellow sign is used to give warning of danger.

15 Safety Signs A symbol surrounded by a red circle with red line is a prohibition notice. Topical to enforce the no smoking policy

16 Safety Signs Green signs provide information.

Increased traffic movement Heavy vehicles Noise pollution Raise awareness of construction activity

18 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
PPE should be used as a last resort, when all other control measures have been considered. Employees must wear PPE where instructed and trained to do so. Take care of your PPE, store safely. Example of where PPE is the most appropriate control measure Nappy changing – gloves Some PPE are disposable – use correct disposal methods Discuss any PPE used in childcare settings with tutors

Identify the nearest emergency exit route Identify the types of fire extinguisher Identify the assembly points Identify the first aider lists Discuss the findings Record any defects and report to H&S
