2. How can I live through lab experiments without injury or damage to equipment?

3. How should I act? Be responsible Do not engage in horseplay, practical jokes, and pranks. This behavior will not be tolerated.

4. What did you say? Follow all written and verbal instructions carefully. Ask your teacher questions if you do not understand the instructions.

5. Can I touch that? DO NOT touch any equipment, supplies, animals, or other materials in the science lab without permission from the teacher.

6. Can I do my own experiment? Perform ONLY authorized and approved experiments. DO NOT conduct any experiments when the teacher is out of the room.

7. Can I eat this? NEVER eat, drink, chew gum, or taste anything in the science lab. The only exception to this rule is if the teacher has specifically told you that you may do so.

8. Where do my hands go? Keep hands away from your face, eyes, and mouth while using science materials or when working with either chemicals or animals. Remember to was your hands with soap and water before leaving the science lab.

9. Do I have to wear that? Wear safety glasses or goggles when instructed. Never remove safety glasses or goggles during an experiment. There will be NO exceptions to this rule.

10. Do I have to clean that up? Keep your work area and the science lab neat and clean. Clean all work areas and equipment at the end of the experiment. Return all equipment clean and in working order to the proper storage area.

11. Can I throw it away? Follow your teacher’s instructions to dispose of any waste materials generated in an experiment.

12. Woops!!! Report to the teacher immediately if there is … An accident (fire, spill, breakage, etc.) An injury (cut, burn, etc.) A hazardous condition (broken equipment, etc.)

13. Is it safe? Treat all chemicals used in the science lab as if they were dangerous. DO NOT touch or smell any chemicals unless specifically instructed to do so.

14. It’s so fluffy! Handle all animals with care and respect. Open animal cages only with permission. Never handle any animals when the teacher is out of the room. Do not take animals out of the science lab. Do not tease or handle animals roughly. Keep animals away from yours and other’s faces. Wear gloves when handling animals. Report any animal bite or scratch to the teacher immediately.

15. How should I carry that microscope? Always carry a microscope with both hands. Hold the arm with one hand; place the other hand under the base.

16. How do I handle specimens? Treat all preserved specimens and dissecting supplies with care and respect. Do not remove preserved specimens from the science lab. Use scalpels, scissors, and other sharp instruments only as instructed. NEVER cut any material towards you. ALWAYS cut away from your body. Report any cut or scratch from sharp instruments to the teacher immediately.

17. Can I open the storage cabinets? Never open storage cabinets or enter the prep/storage room without permission from the teacher

18. Can I take it with me? DO NOT remove chemicals, equipment, supplies, or animals from the science lab without permission from the teacher.

19. GLASSWARE! Handle all glassware with care. Never pick up hot or broken glassware with your bare hands.

20. Will it burn me? Use extreme caution when using matches, a burner, or hot plate. Only light burners when instructed and do not put anything into a flame unless specifically instructed to do so. Do not leave burners/open flame unattended.

21. How should I dress? Dress properly – Long hair must be tied back, no dangling jewelry, and no loose or baggy clothing. Wear safety equipment as instructed.

22. Where is the safety equipment? Locate the following items. Fire blanket Eye wash and emergency shower Electrical and gas emergency shut off Fume hood Emergency exit Fire extinguisher
