UW-Eau Claire Facilities Management Rules of The Road A valid driver’s license is required to operate a utility vehicle. Remember: –Pedestrians have the right of way! Obey Speed Limits (Maximum speed on campus 25mph – 5 mph on sidewalks with pedestrians present) Obey all traffic signs and signals.

UW-Eau Claire Facilities Management Rules of The Road Cont. Do not operate the vehicle or any implement attached to it while under the influence of alcohol or controlled substance, or if you are taking medication that would impair your responses. Report all accidents promptly after they occur.

UW-Eau Claire Facilities Management Drive Safety Always keep both hands on the steering wheel whenever possible. Always keep arms and legs inside of vehicle while it is in motion. Use extreme care when backing and make sure no one is behind vehicle.

UW-Eau Claire Facilities Management Drive Safety Cont. Beware of overhead obstructions (low tree limbs, electrical wires, etc.). Adjust speed to current driving conditions (dry, moist, icy, etc.). Always slow down before turns. Avoid sidewalks when possible. Never carry passengers in the cargo bed. Never engage in “stunt driving” or horseplay.

UW-Eau Claire Facilities Management Use Extra Caution Remember that others may not see you well at night, early in the morning or during inclement weather. Check your vehicles headlights, brake lights and turn signals to be sure they are working properly. Stay a safe distance away from pedestrians, ramp edges, platforms, other equipment, etc.

UW-Eau Claire Facilities Management Use Extra Caution Cont. Park at locations (consistent with efficient performance of duties) that will not disrupt other traffic (including pedestrians) or cause damage to facilities or landscape. Do not leave engine running when unattended.

UW-Eau Claire Facilities Management Safe Loading Do not overload. Keep loads low (not top heavy) so vehicle does not get top heavy. Position loads carefully so they can not shift or tip over. Place loads in box ahead of rear axle. Heavy loads placed behind the rear axle takes weight off of front wheel causing loss of steering control.

UW-Eau Claire Facilities Management Inspections Daily Inspections are to be performed by operators of utility vehicles to: –Check for leaks of fuel, oil or water. –Check for hydraulic leaks. –Check for proper inflation of tires. –Check for damage or unsafe conditions.

UW-Eau Claire Facilities Management Inspections Cont. Weekly Inspections are to be performed by operators of utility vehicles to: –Check the oil. –Check lights for proper operation. –Check that tires have adequate tread. Safety Inspections are to be completed by a qualified mechanic as follows: –Twice each year for trucksters, tractors and loaders. –Annually for riding mowers.

UW-Eau Claire Facilities Management Fueling Safety Smoking is not permitted in refueling areas. Fuel tanks shall not be filled while the engine is running. Spills should be avoided. –Spills over one gallon should be reported to the Office of Loss Prevention and Safety at 36-3999 and your immediate supervisor. –In case of spills, do not restart the vehicle. –Keep people away.
