Global City Teams Challenge September 29-30, 2014 Report Out: Connected, Intelligent Transit Portland, Oregon
2
Project Scope Description – Intelligent, multi-modal congestion reduction project – Foundation: City of Portland’s Climate Action Plan, Broadband Plan, and interest in developing neighborhood-specific performance metrics – Leverage increasingly dense, mixed-use neighborhood with existing fiber, connected signals, and multiple modes of transit currently in use. Partnerships required – City of Portland – University of Portland – Trimet Transit Agency – Private sector partners
3
Project Action Plan Major Tasks – Inventory infrastructure and identify gaps in available resources – Financing/feasibility – Secure commitments from remaining stakeholders – Standardization and usage of data – IGAs; Architect/design engineer for data integration and support services – Deploy air quality sensors on vehicles and in environment Targets – Reduce greenhouse gas emissions by __% in project area – Measurably improve performance of the road system
4
Impacts/Benefits Reduction in greenhouse gas emissions More efficient and intelligent transportation system Increased health benefits to area residents, pedestrians, and cyclists in transit corridor Economic development opportunities
5
Demonstration Demonstration scenario – Leverage fiber in project area and connected traffic signals – Deploy sensors to measure impact caused by and on variety of modes in use along corridor (bus, car, cyclist, pedestrian, etc.) – Collect real-time data on congestion and air quality – Alter duration of signal timing to reflect actual traffic flow and measure impact on air quality – Complete project by 5/31
