6. DNA Extraction Lab (From Kiwi) Soap: Breaks down the cell membrane. NaCl: Allows the DNA to coil (come closer together). Heat: Softens the cell membrane. Cold: Slows the breakdown of DNA. Agitation: Breaks down the cell wall, cell membrane and nuclear membrane allowing the release of the DNA. Alcohol: DNA is not soluble in ice cold ethanol. When added, everything but the DNA will stay in solution.
