5  In the PYP Program of Inquiry, your children will engage in six Units of Inquiry throughout the year. These units are to enable them to construct knowledge and understanding of the world around them through meaningful and purposeful engagements relating to the children's own first hand experiences.  Throughout the inquiries, they will reflect on their learning, continually constructing and modifying theories and making connections between their learning within the school environment and their experiences in the wider world. Embedded into the Unit of Inquiry will be reading, writing, math, science, and social studies. PYP

9 Unit of Inquiry (December / January) (February / March) How We Express Ourselves  Central Idea- Stories can engage their audience and communicate meaning.  Lines of Inquiry-  The elements of a story  Modes of storytelling  Different ways stories are interpreted  Different perspectives from which stories are told Where We are in Place & Time  Central Idea- Learning about previous generations helps us understand the relationship between the past and the present.  Lines of Inquiry-  Ways to find out about past generations  Ways to document the past  Why some behaviours and practices have changed or remained the same.

11 Reading and Writing Workshop ➢ Mini Lesson- 10 min ➢ Daily 5 - 50 min ➢ Conferencing- 30 min ➢ Mid-Workshop Teaching Point- 5 min ➢ Partner Share- 10 min

12 ReadingWriting Read Aloud- Teacher reads aloud books and has discussions with the class. Storytelling- Teacher or student tells a story first and other student can retell the story or change it to trigger ideas for writing. Shared Reading- Teacher and/or students will read text together and work on specific reading skills. Graphic Organizers- Students will use different brainstorming activities, storyboards, retelling with a partner to organize writing piece. Guided Reading- Students read in small groups based on ability and need with teacher guidance. Individual Conferencing- Student meets with teacher to discuss writing piece based on the traits. Choice Reading- Students read independently developing stamina and develop reading strategies. Peer Conferencing- Student shares draft with a buddy for review and extra ideas. Daily Five Activities or tasks that students work on while teacher is meeting with small groups and/or individual conferences.
