Concept Development Problem 1: Count forward and backward using a number line to solve word problems involving time intervals within 1 hour. 0 5 10 152025303540 45 5055 60 LABEL the number line 0-60 in 5 minute intervals Don’t forget to mark the hours from our problem of the day. Plot the times 5:31 P.M. and 5:43 P.M. 5:00 P.M. 6:00 P.M.

Let’s say we started math at 10:15 a.m. We worked for 23 minutes. What time did math end? 0 5 10 152025303540 45 5055 60 10:00 11:00 START TIME END TIME: 10:38 AM Math ended at 10:38 a.m.

Leslie starts reading at 11:24 a.m. She finishes reading at 11:57 a.m. How many minutes does she read? 0 5 10 152025303540 45 5055 11:00 12:00 60 Leslie reads for 33 minutes.

Carlo gets to class at 9:08 a.m. He has to write down homework assignments and complete morning work before math begins at 9:30 a.m. How many minutes does Carlo have to complete his task before math begins? 0 5 10 152025303540 45 5055 60 9:00 a.m. 10:00 a.m 20 minutes + 2 minutes = 22 minutes. Carlo has 22 minutes to complete his task.

Let’s use this number line to label the points when Carlos arrives at school and when math starts. 9:08 9:30 Next, let’s add a new point that shows when Carlos finished writing down the homework assignments. It took him 4 minutes. At what time should we plot the point? 9:12 Now we have a new interval between 9:12 and 9:30. What does Carlos do during this time? His morning work! How long does it take him? Let’s count FORWARD from 9:12 to find the answer. It takes Carlos 18 minutes to complete his morning work. Talk with your partner … could we have solved this problem by counting BACKWARD?

Dorothy Ann, Carlo’s classmate, gets to class at 9:11. it takes her 19 minutes to write down her homework assignments and complete morning work. How can we figure out if Dorothy Ann will be ready to start math at 9:30? 9:30 First, let’s mark the time that Dorothy Ann must finish by. Next, let’s count BACKWARD 19 minutes to see what time she needed to start in order to finish on time. 9:11 Dorothy Ann has just enough time to finish her morning work.

Let’s Practice! I will divide you into groups of 4-5 people. Each group will have 5 minutes to work together to solve the following problems. Make sure everyone in the group agrees on the solution and can explain it to the class, because I will call on someone from the group to be the spokesperson … you don’t get to hoose!

1.Lunch starts at 12:05 p.m. and finishes at 12:40 p.m. How long is lunch? 2.Joyce spends 24 minutes finding everything she needs at the grocery store. 3.It takes her 7 minutes to pay. How long does it take Joyce to find her groceries and pay? 4.Joey gets home at 3:25 p.m. It takes him 7 minutes to unpack and 18 minutes to have a snack before starting his homework. What is the earliest time Joey can start his homework? 5.Shane’s family wants to start eating dinner at 5:45 p.m. It takes him 15 minutes to set the table and 7 minutes to help put the food out. If Shane starts setting the table at 5:25 p.m., will his chores be finished by 5:45 p.m.? 6.Tim gets on the bus at 8:32 a.m. and gets to school at 8:55 a.m. How long is Tim’s bus ride? 7.Joanne takes the same bus as Tim, but her bus ride is 25 minutes. What time does Joanne get on the bus? 8.Davis has 3 problems for math homework. He starts at 4:08 p.m. The first problem takes him 5 minutes, and the second takes him 6 minutes. If Davis finishes at 4:23 p.m., how long does it take him to solve the last problem.
