An introduction to Science and Technology

What is Science? The goal of science is often to describe, explain, and predict relationships that occur naturally. In other words, science tries to explain objects and events. The Scientific Method is based on Empiricism: 1. Observe an event 2. Develop a hypothesis that makes a prediction 3. Test the prediction 4. Observe the result 5. Revise the hypothesis 6. Repeat as needed 7. A successful hypothesis becomes a Scientific Theory

What is Technology? The goal of technology is to try and change the relationship that exists between individuals and the natural environment to achieve desirable results. In other words, technology tries to change objects and events.

Science vs Technology Deals with the natural world. Is very concerned with what is (exists) in the natural world. (i.e.: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Astronomy, Geology, etc.) Deals with how humans modify, change, alter, or control the natural world. Is very concerned with what can or should be designed, made, or developed from natural world materials and substances to satisfy human needs and wants

Science vs Technology Is concerned with processes that seek out the meaning of the natural world by “inquiry”, “discovering what is”, “exploring”, and using “the Scientific Method”. Is concerned with such processes that we use to alter/change the natural world such as “Invention”, Innovation”, Practical Problem Solving, and Design.

Technological Literacy Technological literacy is the ability to use, manage, evaluate, and understand technology. Technology Literacy for All: A Rationale and Study for the Study of Technology (2006)

A technologically-literate person understands: What technology is How technology is created How the use of technology shapes society and in turn, How society shapes the development of technology (S)he is one who is comfortable with the use of technology – neither being scared of it nor infatuated with it.

Brainstorm and Discuss What are some beneficial uses of technology and the various domains in which technology is put to good effect? What are the corresponding harms that have happened as a result?
