2 INTASC STANDARD #3: LEARNING ENVIRONMENT Description: This assignment requires me to research an Educational Contemporary Issue of my partner and I’s choice. We must find as much information as possible on our topic of bullying in schools. We must find keys pieces of a general nature on the topic or Pro/Con sides of the topic as well as create 2 open-ended discussion questions to generate discussion about our topic. Finally, this assignment asks us to present the topic via PowerPoint to the class on the specified class day. Rationale: To document our understanding of InTASC Standard 3, Learning Environments in how bullying affects students on school grounds. We chose this assignment because we want to learn how bullying affects students learning. Also, to document how it affects the physical and emotional state. We must also document how bullying discourages positive social interaction with others.

3 BACKGROUND ON BULLYING Bullying has been an issue for decades. “Bullying is a complex phenomenon, defined by repeated aggressive behavior with the intent to hurt others, as well as a perceived imbalance of power between the bullies and the victims” Ryoo, Wang & Swearer (2015). However, in this generation bullying has become a more serious problem “Being bullied at school has serious mental health consequences for children” (Healy, Sanders & Iyer, 2013). There are different types of bullying. Face to face as well as online bullying or cyberbullying. Both types of bullying can have detrimental results. Let’s see how bullying effects the physical, emotional, mental, and social state of a student.

4 PHYSICAL AFFECTS OF BULLYING Hitting Shoving Punching Throwing objects Pushing Tripping Stealing or destroying possessions (books, clothing, lunch/$$$,etc)

5 EMOTIONAL AFFECTS OF BULLYING Have depression, Have feelings of loneliness Have feelings of isolation Display high levels of emotion that indicate vulnerability and low levels of resilience (The Impact of Bullying) If bullying is severe, it can create suicidal thoughts in the victim

6 MENTAL AFFECTS Those who are bullied tend to Have lower self-esteem (especially in females) Have higher depression Have lower academic performance (especially in poverty areas) Be more reserved Have feelings of anxiety Call to question self-worth

7 SOCIAL AFFECTS Lack quality friendships at school Be less accepted by peers Avoid conflict in fear of bully doing more harm Being socially withdrawn

8 OPEN-ENDED DISCUSSION QUESTION #1 How would you handle the situation if your child or a student was getting bullied, what are the best ways to handle the situation and make sure that child/student does suffer anymore?

9 OPEN-ENDED DISCUSSION QUESTION #2 If someone you know that is or might be getting bullied, what signs should you look out for in that person and steps should/or can be taken next?
