2. -Draft year: 1982 -International treaty -Goal: to establish a legal order for the seas and oceans which will facilitate international communication, and promote peaceful use and conservation of the ocean’s natural resources. -Country’s sovereign territorial waters extend to a maximum of 12 nautical miles beyond its coast, but foreign vessels are allowed through this zone. -Waters are protected from pollution and other violating activities. -Beyond territorial waters, every coastal country may establish an exclusive economic zone extending 200 nautical miles from shore. Within the EEZ the coastal state has the right to exploit and regulate fisheries, construct artificial islands and installations, use the zone for other economic purposes, and regulate scientific research by foreign vessels. Otherwise, foreign vessels (and aircraft) are entitled to move freely through (and over) the zone.

3. -Created and enforced by the United Nations -The areas beyond the zones of the country are called the high seas. Any country can do what they please in this area, as long as it doesn’t break international law. -This law helps to prevent the tragedy of the commons in water systems.
