1 10.2 – Inferences About the Difference of Two Means µ 1 - µ 2 Two samples are independent if the selection of sample data from one population is completely unrelated to the selection of sample data from the other population. Independent samples occur very naturally when we draw two random samples, one from the first population and one from the second population. There is no pairing of measurements between the two populations. Our null hypothesis is that µ1 = µ2 (or µ1 - µ2 = 0)

3 Testing Our null hypothesis is that µ1 = µ2 (or µ1 - µ2 = 0) If H1: µ1 < µ2, then it's a left-tailed test. (µ1 - µ2 < 0) If H1: µ1 > µ2, then it's a right-tailed test. (µ1 - µ2 > 0) If H1: µ1 ? µ2, then it's a two-tailed test. (µ1 - µ2 ≠ 0)
