Do Now… Prepare for a grand STARBUCKS; be sure that you cite TBE from BOTH sources. The characteristics of Cyclops and Odysseus vary because of the differing points of view. Evaluating both texts, argue which character would be considered the greater villain?

U3-R3: Character Analysis LessonVocabulary Characterization Characterization Myth Myth Hero Hero Minotaur Minotaur Theseus Theseus Ariadne Ariadne King Minos & King Aegeus King Minos & King Aegeus Connection Yesterday, we analyzed discussed the types of POV (1 st-person, 2 nd-person, 3 rd-person, and 3 rd-person omniscient ). The POV and the details the narrator includes contribute to a reader’s interpretation of a character’s qualities. Today, we continue background discovery for The Lightning Thief by analyzing another Greek myth, “The Monster in the Maze” by paying attention to what a character says, does, and what others say about a character to determine appropriate character traits. For the past few weeks, we have been evaluating misunderstood characters that have been casted as villains (focusing on those specific traits); so, today we shift our thinking to target the traits that support characters who personify heroes,

Model… Theseus shows that he has special abilities when we learn that he has killed monsters before (scene 3) Theseus shows his strength and special abilities when he dodges the Minotaur’s charge, picks up its broken horn and uses it to kill the monster (scene 6) NOW YOU TRY>>> “The Monster in the Maze”, like many Greek myths, this story has a hero—Theseus. We pay attention to what Theseus says and does, as well as things that others say about him. Each piece of TBE should show that he has special strength, courage, or abilities.
6
Assessment: Which line best contributes to Theseus’s demonstration of his bravery? a.Send me to Crete! I will kill the monster.” b.Let’s get on the ship and head back to Athens. c.The trip will be sad without you to share in our victory. You are a good and brave friend. Base on your response to the previous question; which explanation best supports Theseus’s bravery. He insists on going, even though it is very dangerous, because he wants to protect the young people of Athens. He is determined to go, because he has killed monsters before. Theseus wants to impress Ariadne.

INDEPENDENT WORK… Theseus was clearly portrayed as the obvious hero of this Greek myth, “The Monster in the Maze”; each piece of TBE supported his special strength, courage, and abilities. Some heroes are less notable but equally important, who else in the story exemplifies the qualities of a hero? Support your response with TBE, logic and reasoning.
