1 Bluebird Habitat

2 Nesting Box Design Step slant to roof, angled front panel & predator guard deters unwelcome guests Hinged front panel makes cleaning & monitoring easier Angled front panel also makes it easier for nestlings to fledge Peterson design calls for a 1 3/8 x 2 1/4 oblong hole

3 Nestbox Placement Place in open grassy areas with widely scattered trees and shrubs – Areas with brush and woody vegetation will result in habitation by house wrens. – Place well away from buildings Mount nest boxes 4 to 6 feet above the ground on a metal or wooden post – Placing boxes low to the ground helps to deter sparrows from inhabiting them Face box away from prevailing winds and rain and where the box receives a fair amount of sunlight Tree or shrub should be located 25 to 100 feet away in front of a box entrance – Provides a perch for foraging adults and fledglings will use this cover on their first flight

4 General Principle Attempt to accommodate the natural nesting instincts and requirements of the birds while still allowing for weekly monitoring during the breeding season
