What we do in Foundation Stage Skills Mathematics involves providing children with opportunities to develop and improve their skills in counting, understanding and using numbers, calculating simple addition and subtraction problems; and to describe shapes, spaces, and measures. Foundations It is vital to lay secure foundations in early mathematics. Children need to engage with numbers and to see how to use them in their everyday environment for labelling, quantifying and calculating: we want to help them to develop a better understanding of the world in which they live.

Therefore, we provide a balance of: Adult-led activities (Number Time) Child initiated activities (Discovery Time )

What children are learning in Reception class Counting s kills to enable them to count objects accurately, in any arrangement. Picture of objects in a line, Model touch counting, separation counting, kinaesthetic counting (clapping, jumping), visual counting etc Counting sets and comparing amounts. Selects the correct numeral to represent 1 to 5, then 1 to 10 objects. One more and one less, be able to say a number that is more or less than a given number. Simple addition and subtraction - The early stages of addition and subtraction are developed as children begin to partition and combine sets and to remove objects from sets

Practical Addition (using objects and pictures) 3 + 2 = 5

Practical Subtraction (using objects and pictures) 8 – 2 = 6

Resources we use

What can you do to help?

Numbers are all around and we can play games with number. Can you find 1 more or 1 less than 10? Which is the bigger number?

If we all have a cake how many cakes will be left? How many tins can we fit on this shelf?

–Bath-time (filling and emptying containers, counting) –Counting rhymes –Help with the cooking (measuring, weighing, ordering the recipe) –Setting table places (how many plates/cups etc) –Paying in shops (including change) –Estimating amounts (how many apples/sweets?)

Questions? Thank you
