Ch 1 Sections 3 and 4 J. Willis CMS

Math and Science Estimation – reasonable guess; about the same as the true value. -About how many apples in a 5 lb bag? -About how long will it take to get to Atlanta? - About how many items are in a jar?

Accuracy and Precision  Accuracy – close to the true value  Precision – how closely a group of measures are to each other

Mean, Median, Mode  Mean - Average Add and divide by total number of items  Median - Middle Order numbers least to greatest, find the one in the middle  Mode – Most Which number occurs the most frequently

Decimal Work  Add/Subtract – line up decimals, then operate  Example: 4.25 + 325.698 329.948

Decimal Work  Multiply – operate numbers – the answer will have the same amount of decimal places that are in the problem.  Ex: 2.5 X2.1 25 500 5.25 2 Significant figures!!

Safety!  Read lab directions; how do you know what to do if you don’t read?  Follow lab directions; you will not participate if not followed  Clean up lab; Very important (5 classes a day) Little things add up to one big mess!  ACCIDENT!!! Report IMMEDIATELY to instructor.
