This diagram shows the steps involved in growing a plantation pine, from preparing the planting site to the harvest of the tree for its timber some 25–30 years later.

Cut out and label the “Life cycle of a managed radiata pine” above (write a heading and your name). Place it onto an A4 piece of paper to hand in as a report.

First, land is prepared before planting by clearing away competing shrubs and weeds. Young plants, about 30 centimetres high, are planted out in winter months. The young trees are pruned one to three times. The lower branches are removed when they are young to produce knot-free timber.

The stand of forest trees is thinned to around 300 trees per hectare, giving the best specimens more space to grow well. Most pruning and thinning occurs within the first 12–15 years, and for the next 10–15 years the remaining trees are left to grow until harvest. The trees are felled and delimbed, and the logs are transported to a timber mill or port for shipping overseas. 1.How would thinning allow trees to grow better? What does it mean by thinning? How many trees are there per hectare? 2.When is most of the pruning and thinning done in the life of the tree? 3.How do you think 5ply 12mm material has been made? How well did it work in your stool?

Example: I found that the plywood split and that when I was making a mortise and tenon joint it was in so many layers that it wasn’t predictable where it was going to split. The veneer pine is a sustainable material to use but I find that it is difficult to do certain joints. This lead me to do drilling and use a dowel joint. Using timber with the mortise and tenon joint meant that it was easier to predict where the grain was going to split. I controlled this by making a mark with my chisel to show where it would stop. 1.How well has using timber improved the control you have over splitting in your material?

Question: Why is it important to use sustainable plantation timber or recycled timber in your work? Write a report to show how the technological modelling helped you make a decision about using recycled timber or sustainable plantation timber. Use the diagrams and explain how important it is that you select either recycled timber or sustainable plantation timber.
