JEFFERSON’S PRESIDENCY

LOUISIANA PURCHASE 1803 P322  The Louisiana Purchase was an incredible deal for the United States, the final cost totaling less than five cents per acre at $15 million (about $283 million in today's dollars). France's land was mainly unexplored wilderness, and so the fertile soils and other valuable natural resources we know are present today might not have been factored in the relatively low cost at the time.

ROLES IN GOVERNMENT  During the American Revolutionary War (1775-83), Jefferson served in the Virginia legislature and the Continental Congress and was governor of Virginia. He later served as U.S. minister to France and U.S. secretary of state, and was vice president under John Adams (1735-1826). Jefferson, who thought the national government should have a limited role in citizens' lives, was elected president in 1800

MARBURY VS MADISON P321  This historic court case established the concept of Judicial Review or the ability of the Judiciary Branch to declare a law unconstitutional.

Grew to $38,722.25, 15x original amount. When you add in price of land each member received upon return as a reward, the total tops $136,000. In today’s dollars that is $126,000,000. It cost $25 billion to put a man on the moon.  Permanent party: consisted of 33 to 35, including. One woman, one baby and one dog.  Expedition discovered 122 new animals and 178 new plants.  Each man consumed 9 pounds of meat per day when available.

EMBARGO ACT OF 1807 P331  The Embargo Act of 1807 was a general embargo enacted by the United States Congress against the United Kingdom and France during the Napoleonic Wars

AMERICA PAYS  A convention between the United States and Britain regarding the treaty of 1794 is concluded. A commission rules that the United States owes £2,664, 000 to British citizens in settlement of Revolutionary War claims. January 08, 1802

WESTPOINT  Congress reduces the size of the U.S. army to its 1796 limits. It also passes an act, which is signed into law by Jefferson, establishing an official United States Military Academy at West Point. March 16, 1802

OHIO TERRITORY  President Jefferson signs the Enabling Act, establishing procedures under which territories organized under the Ordinance of 1787 can become a state. The law effectively authorizes people of the Ohio territory to hold a convention and frame a constitution. April 30, 1802
