350 + years ago no knowledge of cells existed and the theory of spontaneous generation was wide spread 1590 Hans and Zacharias Jansen created the 1st compound microscope but it was not strong enough to identify cells. 1665 Robert Hook Identify Cork cells that reminded him of the cells the Monks lived in so he coined the name cells
