Brave/courageous Swift and strong Fearless Commitment to independence Intrinsic Weak-willed Unwilling to marry
3
Atalanta’s Infancy Atalanta's father wanted a son Decided Atalanta was not worth being brought up Left on a wild mountainside to die of cold and hunger A she-bear took charge of her, nursed her, and kept her warm
4
Atalanta’s Childhood Atalanta became a very active and daring girl due to being taken in by the she-bear She was found by kind hunters who took her in and raised her She started to become a great huntress
5
Once two centaurs that were swifter and stronger than any human caught sight of her when she was alone. Atalanta held her ground, drew her bow and shot them both with arrows, causing them to both be mortally wounded.
6
Artemis sent out a monstrous Calydonian boar that ravaged the country because she was mad at the King, Oeneus. Atalanta assembled with a young band of heroes to kill the boar. Many men died in the combat; Atalanta shot the boar with an arrow and wounded it. Oeneus’s son Meleager finished off the boar and claimed that Atalanta should be the one to keep the pelt.
7
When Meleager (the prince) was a kid, the Fates came to his mother Althea, and said until the wood in their fireplace turns to ash he would live. Althea took the wood out of the fire, extinguished the flame, and put it in a chest. During the boar hunt Meleager fell in love with Atalanta at first sight. His uncles didn’t think it was right to give her the pelt of the boar, and Meleager killed them both. Angered that Meleager killed her brothers, Althea burned the wood and killed her son. Then she hung herself out of guilt.
8
Atalanta was a beautiful and muscular young woman. Her face seemed too maidenly to be that of a boy but too boyish to be that of a maiden.
9
Some say she sailed with the Argonauts, others say Jason persuaded her not to do so (the Argonauts were the people who went after the Golden Fleece). At the funeral games for Jason’s uncle Pelias, she appeared amongst the contestants, which is where she beat Achilles’ father Peleus in wrestling.
10
After Atalanta beat the father of Achilles in a wrestling match, she discovered who her parents were. She went to live with them, and her father thought she was as good as a son now.
11
View of Women Atalanta was determined to never marry. It was as if she thought women were too dependent on men. She liked the feeling of being better than men at everything.
12
Her Ultimate Fate Since Atalanta was the fastest runner in the land, she agreed to marry whoever could beat her in a race. Melanion got hold of some golden apples that no one could resist from Aphrodite. Once he raced her, he threw them so she’d get distracted and chase them. Melanion beat Atalanta, and she was forced to spend the rest of her life with him.
13
Atalanta started out as a baby left for dead on the side of a mountain and ended up being a heroic hunter with skills unmatched by all except Melanion.
14
She despised love and would not marry anyone, was very prideful in her ability to outrun male suitors, and ended up losing to Melanion and thus having to get married. Although the golden apples were what caused her to lose, her pride was what got her to race in the first place.
15
When Meleager killed his uncles for them criticizing his choice to give Atalanta the boar pelt, his mother killed him.

Cultural Conclusion Overall this Greek myth tried to convey to us that you shouldn’t be too confident because what goes around comes around. We see this when Atalanta becomes very conceited and says that whoever can beat her in a race can marry her. Little did she know that she’d get beaten by Melanion and loose her independence.
