Bob Arnkil, lead expert Talking’ ‘bout MY GENERATION PATRAS JANUARY 2009 The My Generation project has been co-financed by the European Regional Development Funds, through the URBACT II Operational Programme.

We have somehow shifted near the end of MY GENERATION project, it is a Friday 14. 2011 Good things have happened… In terms of connections – what are you particularly happy about? ”I’m really happy that this connection was established”

MY GENERATION AND THE TOPICS OF -COORDINATION -CITY ACTION REPORTS -MG/MY DIARY -GOOD PRACTICE CASES/METHODS -LOCAL SUPPORT GROUPS AND ACTION PLANS

MY GENERATION  CONTRIBUTING TO BUILDING SOCIAL ENVIRONMENTS THAT GENERATE TRUST  BEING CONNECTED BETTER IN PROMOTING THE YOUTH CAUSE  UNDERSTANDING BETTER THE NEEDS AND ASPIRATIONS OF THE ACTORS  NEW CONNECTIONS (LSG…)  ACTION THAT MAKES A DIFFERENCE (GOOD PRACTICE)  BETTER COORDINATION (important ideas and next steps in LAP…)

FIRST PHASE: ANCHORING/FOCUS IN CITY CONTEXT SECOND PHASE: NETWORK LEARNING MY GENERATION LOCAL ACTION PLAN DRAFTS GOOD PRACTICE CANDIDATES CITY REPORTS/STATUS LOCAL ACTION PLANS GOOD PRACTICES CITY REPORTS/FINAL GUIDE- LINES (AFTER PATRAS)

Three levels of learning ”Metalessons” on better coordination- connectedness, MG networking and method development MG cluster learning: good practice conclusions on outreach and education/employment Operational level – local networks & Local Support Groups (LSG) working on their key challenges and drawing up their Local Action Plans (LAP)

Activities and actors concerning youth are now fragmented Of particular interest for us are actors and activities concerning outreach and education/employment  ”Defragmentation = better coordination = better connectedness of activities and actors concerning the young as a resourse of cities  Better coordination (= new/better connectedness) is a key outcome of MG in all cities Coordination

Each city has its particular challenges concerning the coordination of actors and activities Establishing a new platform for a new activities – establishing a ”node” to coordinate better existing activities with some new activities > FOCUS > WHAT IS RELEVANT/MAKES A DIFFERENCE Derived from this MG can serve a different purpose in the cities (the importance/role as a platform of connections) The conclusions of coordination are based on the MG experiences of working with these (and also other) actors and activities

MG WORKING MARTIX: KEY ITEMS RUNNING THROUGH ALL ACTIVITIES AND REPORTING OF MG NEEDS, IDEAS AND ASPIRATIONS OF THE ACTORS/ STAKEHOLDERS NEW CONNECTIONS AND ACTION MAKING A DIFFERENCE: WHAT WORKS SURPRISES, BARRIERS, AND NEGOTIATING THEM KEY LEARNING POINTS, LOCAL AND TRANSNATIONAL CONCLUSIONS, RECOMMENDATIONS, NEXT STEPS

THE MG WORKING MATRIX Needs Ideas New connec- tions and action What works Sur- prises Barriers Learning Points -Local -MG Con- clusions Next steps/ Way ahead Youth Edu- cation Busi- ness Local Comm. 11 Partner City Tasks With a process supported and led by the LSG, and via workshop(s) define the focus of the city MG-project: Where does the City MG-project want to make a difference in terms of establishing new connections and joint action = first draft of Local Action Plan Executing the action, exploring, experimenting negotiating Keeping a ”MG Field Diary” using also MG Working Matrix (making sure you get ”lively material”) Reporting

CITY REPORTING: The role and tasks of CITY reports in MG The city reports are the reports on the MG activities of the city (provided by core group/contact person ) The city reports use the GUIDELINES (including the working MATRIX, in a creative way) In addition to addressing the MATRIX themes, the CITY reports provide basic/background information information, stories, pictures, video, contact info, etc. according to GUIDELINES

Giving an action report on the launch of action CITY- report by May 09 (Glasgow), progress report for ”halfway house” January 10 (in XXX) and final by May (Gdansk) 10 according to MG GUIDELINES (provided after PATRAS meeting) Providing case/method reports on Outreach and Edu/Employment (Outreach preliminary by May 09 (Glasgow) and final by May 10 (Gdansk), Edu/Empl. Preliminary Sept 09 (Gothenburg), final Oct 10 (Valencia) Drawing a draft and final Local Action Plan Nov-Dec. 10 according to GUIDELINES and using MG Working Matrix REPORTING AND CASE STUDIES

MG/MY DIARY (kept by city core team/ contact person, could be a collective diary on Internet/intrane, tblog Care should be taken to keep a diary on what happens in the MG process, it will help the reporting A rough guideline of what should be noted is in the MG MATRIX Particular attention should be given to: -Messages/needs expressed by the actors/stakeholders -New connections established -What seems to work/ what not -Surprises, incidents, events

Theme Leader Tasks in Outreach and Edu/Employment, together with experts Supporting the understanding and creativeness primarily in the themes of Outreach and Edu/Employment (but also coordination) Extracting Good Practice (cases/methods/vingettes…) Arranging joint learning activities & exchange in the Themes Drawing preliminary Good Practice learning lessons on the Themes form cases/material provided by Cities and other sources in a timetable specified in the GUIDELINES Compiling good practice case/method reports on the Themes for Network closure Feb 11 (Antwerp) using MG and other material

Theme leader tasks, together with lead expert and experts for Coordination Supporting the understanding and creativeness in the theme of Coordination Extracting the overall ”metalessons” of achieving better coordination/ connectedness in MG Reviewing preliminary reports and cases and providing feedback from a coordination/connection point of view Drawing preliminary observations and recommendations by Sept 09 based on MG materials and experiences Reviewing drafts of final reports on Good Practice cases and LAPs, providing feedback and making a report on Good Practice of coordination/connectedness based on MG material and others

LSG : The role and tasks of Local Support Groups in MG LSG should be ”something different” in terms of new connections: a ”fitting piece”/ development coalition/platform promoting the youth cause in the respective context The LSG should reflect and work with the MATRIX: NEED BASED, NEW CONNECTIONS & ACTION, MAKING A DIFFERENCE (WHAT WORKS), MUTUAL LEARNING… Special attention to real participation of the young generation Secure a core LSG and then a broader network implementing the MATRIX Keep a ”Field diary” how the process unfolds (see MG DIARY) Secure channels to mainstreaming and sustainability Develop and consolidate the LAP that draws together the conclusions, recommendations and next steps of the MATRIX

LAP : The role and tasks concerning Local Action Plans in MG The purpose of the LAP is to secure the next steps and sustainability of the new connections and action LAP is the CONCLUSION AND NEXT STEP (The ”summary column” of the MG Working MATRIX) LAP contributes to a new level of good coordination, engagement and results in youth matters in the city The LAP is developed in the MG process, first draft in kick-off workshop, then along the way and a draft of final LAP in Nov-Dec 10, and after feedback, final Every LAP must be tailored to the context

A summary of this will be given in MG GUIDELINES -Tasks -Workshops -Reports -Good Practice Cases -LSGs -LAPs -Timelines After the Patras-workshop
