CSC,17.9.2008 1 Status of HIPPI – September 2008 M. Vretenar, A. Lombardi

CSC,17.9.2008 2 Contents  News since April 2008  WP highlights  Meetings, deliverables  Organisation of HIPPI08

CSC,17.9.2008 2008-WP annual meetings  WP2 : June 11 th in Grenoble  WP3 : no formal meeting this year  WP4 : June 20 th at CERN  WP5 : May 19 th at GSI 3

CSC,17.9.2008 4 WP2- normal conducting cavities  WP2 hardware : DTL power coupler - finished H-DTL - see next slide SCL (cold model) – finished CCDTL (2 prototypes) – finished  4 prototypes of accelerating structures are completed and tests are underway and mostly completed.  Total of 8 deliverables

CSC,17.9.2008 WP2- normal conducting cavities the strategy of the two models was changed (CARE Steering Committee in April): We have delivered (report1) as a first step a power CH cavity :It was tested with 2kW cw end of 2006. So we could call it CH prototype1 instead of "cold model". Our CH prototype2 is now the 1:2 scaled model of the FAIR p-linac cavity2. It is the coupled cavity with two CH sections coupled by a DTL-type lens. This will be the content of our second delivery as announced in delivery report1 already.  The coupled, 1:2 scaled rf model for cavity2 with an energy range from 11.7 to 24.3 MeV (prototype 2) is under investigation.  A contract for the design and production of this cavity in full scale for RF power measurements was made and has started already.  Mechanical and welding tests for cavity production have started.  HIPPI has triggered this development and has helped to develop the know how to apply this novel type of cavity in time for the GSI-FAIR needs. 5 CH developments in Frankfurt- U. Ratzinger

CSC,17.9.2008 WP2 – deliverables status  All due deliverables have been delivered (5 over 8)  3 deliverables to go : DTL (ok-no delay); H- mode DTL (ok-no delay); and comparative assessment (editor C. Plostinar/RAL, presently collecting data). »No particular worries 6

CSC,17.9.2008 7 WP3- superconducting cavities  WP3 hardware : Cavity A and B (elliptical cavities-700MHz) Spoke cavities 700 MHz 352 MHz 2-gap and multi-gap CH resonator 700 MHz RF test stand  4 cavities have been finished, test stand is ready  Total of 7 deliverables

CSC,17.9.2008 8 WP3 – 700 MHZ test stand At Saclay : At Saclay :  cavity B has been tested at cold with its Helium tank, and the results are quite good (regarding the beta of this cavity) ; results published at EPAC'08  now making the assembly of the magnetic shielding on the cavity and preparing a cold test in Cryholab. The last pieces of the couplers are close to be delivered to Saclay (within 2 weeks) and we should then make the coupler assembly in clean room and start the RF power conditioning of these 2 first couplers. At INFN :  assembly of the magnetic shielding and the cavity A is in progress.  Horizontal cold test foreseen in November At Juelich and Orsay :  the cavity (3-spokes) is now ready (chemical treatment performed at Saclay, HPR and clean room assembly at Orsay).  the cold tests should be performed in September. At Frankfurt:  the s.c. CH - prototype cavity is close to being implemented in the horizontal cryostat. Operation at fixed frequency is intended in the next test. S. Chel

CSC,17.9.2008 WP3 – deliverables status  3 deliverables over 7 are delivered  4 deliverables to go : Elliptical cavities high power test will not be completed in 2008, needs re-scoping: 'High power tests of couplers for cavity A and B’ Spoke cavity-proto testing : low power tests for sure possibly high power test. The final report (cavity assessment) will be discussed in the next HIPPI meeting. Final report on SC-CH (Frankfurt) >>approximately ok 9

CSC,17.9.2008 10 WP4 - chopping  WP4 hardware Chopper structures (A,B) Chopper drivers (A,B) Dump – completed  Hardware is mostly on time, problem with the test stand. According to the plan the measurements should have started march07 at CERN. There will be no measurements with beam and the comparison will be made on the basis of electrical measurements and other tests that have already been done  Total of 6 deliverables

CSC,17.9.2008 WP4 - deliverable status  4 deliverable over 6 are delivered  2 deliverables to go Beamline assembly (and measurements) : we will have a description of the beamline assembly but no measurements Comparative assesment will be coordinated by AL. Material already availiable »This WP has been plagued by external problems (RAL manpower and IPHI-RFQ delays) 11

CSC,17.9.2008 12 WP5 - beam dynamics  WP5 Diagnostics Profile by fluorescence Non interceptive bunch measurement Halo device Beam profile at FZJ Measurements at the UNILAC Code comparison  Total of 10 deliverables

CSC,17.9.2008 WP5-deliverable status  7 deliverables over 10 are delivered  3 deliverables to go : Code beanchmarking at GSI : at GSI the code benchmarking went through a very interesting refinement process since May. It was triggered by referee comments, after submission to PRSTAB, which stimulated us to go beyond the rms comparison. Lars Groening invested quite a bit of time since May to get an initial distribution that fits closely to the measured input in terms of profile, and thus btained better rms agreement for all codes involved. A lifely and very stimulating discussion of Lars' paper occurred at the recent HB2008 in its linac working group. Simulations (and experiments )at CERN Comparative assessment of dynamics and measurements »This WP performed really well 13

CSC,17.9.2008 14 Milestones and deliverables DELIVERABLES : 2005 : 1/1 delivered. 2006 : 8/8, delivered 2007 : 8/9 delivered, one left is “cern beamline assembly” 2008 : 2/13 delivered. Missing a grand total of 12 deliverables, of which 4 are the comparative assessment reports to be discussed and prepared at HIPPI08

CSC,17.9.2008 15 Dissemination  Dissemination 5 reports since april 08 3 Notes since april 08 conference paper : should check epac08 Total number of HIPPI publications : 28 Notes, 17 reports, 60 conf paper, 3 journal publications and 16 documents.

CSC,17.9.2008 16 HIPPI08 Meeting at CERN   Wednesday 29, October to Friday 31, October 2008 at CERN (AB Auditorium Meyrin).   Web site: http://ab-project-hippi- meeting.web.cern.ch/ab-project-HIPPI-Meeting/, Indico site http://indico.cern.ch/conferenceDisplay.py?confId= 39839, announced on CERN Welcome page.http://ab-project-hippi- meeting.web.cern.ch/ab-project-HIPPI-Meeting/ http://indico.cern.ch/conferenceDisplay.py?confId= 39839   All 3 members of the ESAC: J. Stovall (LANL-SNS), Y. Yamazaki (KEK-JPARC), A. Pisent (LNL) will be present.

CSC,17.9.2008 HIPPI08 – Programme -Shorter WP sessions for reporting progress -Time for preparing the comparative assessments -Presentations on the status of the 3 projects supported by HIPPI -Time for discussing the status of the last missing deliverables
