Javiera Castaldini

This lesson is made to students of 5 th grade of primary school, following the official program of what is expected to students to learn. It is focused on the second unit “the house and the family”, specifically the family members and some basic prepositions of place.

Students may have some idea about family members but is not something that they, at this stage, are in complete knowledge; so to make it easy to comprehend I show them a picture of a famous family to introduce the vocabulary of the family members. After the explanation I give copies of the handout to the students.

After answering all possible questions from students I give them a work sheet of a crossword puzzle about the family. A fun way to test what was recently taught. I give them about 15 minutes to do it, while I walk between students to answer their doubts.

Teaching prepositions can be really boring so to make it fun we can do some activities which will call the attention from students. Prepositions that we will teach: Behind In front In By Over Between Under On

First, to show them the prepositions that we will be learning I choose a memorable object (like a bear) and then I put two chairs in front of the class. I put the bear behind, in front, in, by, over, between, under and on the chair saying what I am doing out loud. I repeat the most difficult ones and I answer students questions.

Next thing is to make groups of no more than 5 students each, with a bear or any toy and two chairs and I give them directions of where they have to put the bear. Then the winner group is the one which make it better, faster or without any mistakes. (We can have some prizes for the winner, but of course if we do that we have to give consolation prizes too)

After we finish our activity I resolve the doubts from students and I give them two sheets. One with the prepositions that we saw and the second one with activities to practice and do at home (or if there is some time left students can start doing it).

Doing activities for our students makes an ordinary lesson into a memorable one, which remains in the memory of the students and hopefully also remains what has been taught. Makes a fun environment to work with and builds a bond between students and the teacher.
