2. Founded in 1986 by Jim and Janice Dougherty The first store opened in Arizona in 1987 PetSmart was originally called “PetFood Warehouse.” In 1989 PetFood Warehouse was changed to PetsMart. They also opened the first full grooming salon as well as bird, fish, and small animal departments. In 1992 the 50 th store was opened and they also opened their first in store adoption center and veterinary clinic In 1994 the 100 th store was opened. In 1996 eight stores were opened in Canada. In 2004 they started their PetSmart PetPerks program. In 2005 they “changed” their name once again, from “PetsMart” to “PetSmart.”

4. PetSmart started making changes to their company in 2011. A few of the first changes they made were: adding larger recycling bins to their retail stores, making their plastic bags out of 25% recycled material, and selling reusable canvas bags. PetSmart started giving out their “Green Associate of the Year” award in 2012.

5. PetSmart is partnered with many different companies, organizations, and universities. One of the main partnerships is with Good360 PetSmart is increasing recycling, decreasing energy usage, and reusing water for their aquariums. PetSmart runs multiple charities to help raise money and awareness for helping the environment.

6. The efforts by PetSmart are important because they’re raising money and awareness for recycling. They are reusing 90% of the water from their aquariums, saving thousands of dollars. They are also changing their lighting systems, reducing their carbon foot print.
