3 Life in 50s Economy didn’t improve – unemployment increased Poor living conditions Emigration – 400,000 Only exports were dairy products Didn’t bring in enough money

4 Change of leader Dev retires 1959 Lemass becomes Taoiseach Appointed young ministers – Jack Lynch, Charles Haughey Wanted a fresh start Life improved during the 60s Lemass era Achievements – improvements in education and economy; RTE set up

5 Achievements - Economy T.K. Whitaker – programme for economic expansion Plan to kickstart the economy He believed that Ireland needed to start exporting manufactured goods 1. Grants to irish businesses 2. Tax breaks and grants offered to attract foreign industries to Ireland New factories built

6 Result of this? Unemployment down Emigration down Life improved

7 Education Donogh O’Malley – minister for education Free secondary education set up Free school transport for students who were far away New subjects more suited to jobs introduced – ie business, accounting Less classical subjects – ie latin University grants offered – needed 4 honours in leaving cert Attendance at 2 nd level and college increased

8 Social change Culture changed in the country – why? When RTE set up – 1961 – 1 st tv channel People started to think for themselves By 1970 half the population had tv Debates on social issues meant people had their say Late Late Show – example of famous debates

9 The Catholic Church The church had huge power in Ireland They always had ever since Dev consulted them over constitution Constitution offered a ‘special role’ for the catholic church in Ireland No divorce, no contraception, no abortion, Also had censorship over books Stopped Browne’s mother and child scheme

10 Changes in the Church Change started after Vatican Council in 1960s This was a meeting in Rome to modernise the church Less censorship Mass in vernacular Opened discussion on issues

11 Relations with North Terence o’neill was the first minister Lemass met captain Terence o’neill 1 st ever Meeting between irish and northern irish leader! O’neill then came down to Ireland for 2 nd meeting Lemass hope to influence north to join us Hope to do this by making Ireland wealthy… …so the north would want a share in it Govts worked together on tourism and common issues
